PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A new poll indicates Mainers are narrowly divided on whether to overturn or keep a new state law that would lower the state’s income tax rates while expanding the state’s sales tax on scores of new items.

Mainers vote June 8 on a tax reform law that lawmakers passed last year, but has not gone into effect.

According to poll results released Thursday by Critical Insights market research firm in Portland, 43 percent said they favored keeping the law, while 38 percent said they would do away with it. Nineteen percent were undecided.

The poll was based on 600 phone interviews from April 28 and May 7 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
