PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Officials in Portland say they welcome Gov. John Baldacci’s proposal for an $8 million deep-water cruise ship berth in the city’s harbor.
If approved by the Legislature and then Maine voters, the $8 million bond would fund a “mega-berth” at the city’s Gateway Terminal.
The proposal is part of a $79 million bond package the governor is proposing.
It would allow more large cruise ships and other vessels to visit Portland.
City Manager Joe Gray tells the Portland Press Herald the project would benefit Portland and all of southern Maine.
Last year 45 cruise ships visited Portland and 75 are scheduled this year.
The mega-birth proposal would allow two cruise ships to visit at once.
