Portland rips New Britain


PORTLAND (AP) – Chad Spann belted a two-run homer and Jeremy West added a solo shot as the Portland Sea Dogs beat the New Britain Rock Cats 9-5 Monday in the Eastern League.

Scott Whitrock tripled for the Rock Cats and Denard Span collected two RBIs.

The Sea Dogs (27-20) had a 5-0 lead after four innings. Spann’s homer, a towering fly ball over the left-field wall in the third, was the biggest hit. Portland also capitalized on three New Britain errors.

Doubles by Doug Deeds and Jose Morales sparked three runs for the Rock Cats (22-25) in the sixth.

Brandon Moss knocked an RBI double and Alberto Concepcion singled with the bases loaded as the Sea Dogs added three in the seventh.

Portland starting pitcher Chris Smith improved to 5-3 with the win, while New Britain starter Glen Perkins dropped to 1-5.
