Portland Symphony Orchestra celebrates Mozart’s 256th birthday


PORTLAND – The Portland Symphony Orchestra celebrates Mozart’s 256th birthday with a special one-time concert: Happy Birthday Mozart! at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27 at Portland’s Merrill Auditorium.

The Mozart birthday celebration, led by conductor Robert Moody, will feature Serge Prokofiev’s lighthearted homage to the Classical era and PSO concertmaster and violinist Charles Dimmick in the soloist spotlight. The Happy Birthday Mozart! concert highlights the consummate craftsmanship of one of Mozart’s final symphonies. Featured selections include Prokofiev Symphony No. 1, “Classical,” Mozart Violin Concerto No. 3, and Mozart Symphony No. 39. Guests are invited to join artists for the Concert Conversation an hour and 15 minutes before the concert and a post-concert question-and-answer chat directly following the performance.

In anticipation of the show, PSO is hosting a Music Lovers’ Luncheon at noon on Friday, Jan. 25. PSO Concertmaster Charles Dimmick and Flautist Rachel Braude will discuss the upcoming “Happy Birthday Mozart!” concert and talk about their lives as PSO musicians.
