Potentially misleading photo and caption

Is it still considered “normal” to eat freshwater fish caught in Maine?

That’s the incorrect assumption that one might draw from the photo and caption on page B1 of the Saturday, June 30, paper that showed four young women being taught to fish on the Androscoggin River thanks to a program put on by St. Mary’s, the Androscoggin Land Trust and Dag’s Bait Shop.

It would be best to remind these folks and the general public that there is an advisory, due to mercury, dioxins and/or PCBs, to eat no more than six-to-12 eight-ounce fish from the river per year. Pregnant or nursing mothers and children should eat none.

It’s a sad reality that “catch and release” is the healthiest way to enjoy fishing in the river.
