Preparing for flu epidemic

Maine Public Health Director Dr. Dora Anne Mills put together a list of suggestions of things people can do to prepare for a bird flu epidemic. According to Mills, people should start by:

• making emergency kits in homes with “at least three to five days worth of flood, hydration fluids, fever reducing medicines (like Tylenol) and other essentials;

• making plans for how to stay connected with friends and loved ones if it’s unsafe to meet in person;

• Being careful to practice good hygiene, washing hands frequently, covering sneezes and coughs, and staying home which sick; and

• getting flu shots before the start of flu season. Mills said that “although there is no commercially vaccine against the H5N1,” getting a flu shot “will help us maintain our overall health” and strengthen people’s immune systems.
