CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) – A man serving a 90-day sentence for a probation violation was killed Monday when he was struck by a truck driven by a correctional officer outside the minimum-security state prison, officials said.

The correction officer had just completed a delivery to the kitchen late Monday morning when the accident occurred, said Ann Fortin, a spokeswoman for the corrections department. The incident was being investigated by the Rhode Island State Police, but was being considered an accident, Fortin said.

The prisoner was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital, Fortin said.

The department notified the man’s family Monday but did not plan to release his name publicly until Tuesday, said Ellen Alexander, assistant director of administration. He was identified only as a 52-year-old white male whose last known residence was in Pawtucket.

The inmate was serving a 90-day sentence for a probation violation that was due to end Feb. 13, but he still faced a pending drug possession charge, Fortin said.

She did not have additional information about how the accident occurred and would not name the driver of the truck.
