1924 – 2014
RUMFORD — Ralph Hazelton, 90, of East Peru, passed away peacefully at Rumford Community Hospital on Sunday, Dec. 28, with his family at his side.
Ralph was born in Rumford on Aug. 15, 1924, the son of Sidney A. Hazelton and Edith M. (Holman) Hazelton. Ralph graduated from Stephens High School and served in the U.S. Army from August 1943 until September 1945. A member of the 79th Division, Ralph saw action in the European Theater, where he was honored with four Purple Hearts and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Upon his return from the war, he graduated from the University of Maine, with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He married Annie Grudzinsky on Sept. 12, 1948. They lived in East Peru, where he was a postmaster and general store owner, until his retirement in 1981.
Ralph loved the outdoors and was active well into his 80s. As a young man, he was a baseball pitcher in high school, then in the Legion and later, on the UMO college team. He enjoyed mountain climbing, downhill and cross-country skiing, skating and bowling, and always looked forward to family get-togethers at the camp on Worthley Pond. He especially enjoyed attending the sporting and arts events of his grandchildren.
He was a patient, caring person who loved a good laugh and touched the heart of everyone he met.
He is survived by his daughter, Cathy Hazelton, of Peru and her husband, Bill Hine; son, Sidney and his wife, Sandra, of Auburn; and grandchildren, Brett and Lara Hine, Jennifer and Nicholas Shostak and Evan, Erica and Annie Hazelton.
He was predeceased by his wife, Annie, on May 6, 1986; and his daughter, Linda, on Dec. 5, 2013.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Rumford Community Hospital for their exceptional, personal care and attention.
