RANGELEY — Businesses in Rangeley and Oquossoc came together for celebration of Oktoberfest weekend recently.
Festivities kicked off Friday night at the Rangeley Inn and Tavern with a brat and strudel competition. Participants included Forks in the Air Mountain Bistro, IGA, Inner Eye, Loon Lodge Inn and Restaurant, Moose Alley, Rangeley Inn & Tavern, Red Onion, Sarge’s and The Shed.
Guests and a panel of judges determined their favorites, awarding Loon Lodge Inn and Restaurant the People’s Choice Best Strudel and Forks in the Air Mountain Bistro the People’s Choice Best Brat, Judge’s Choice Best Brat and Judge’s Choice Best Strudel.
Stein-hoisting semifinals were held throughout town on Friday night. Competitors demonstrated their strength and will hoisting a five-pound stein for as long as they could stand in hopes of being named champion.
Semifinalist gathered Saturday night at the finals, baring guts and glory to be crowned the local victor. Winners Marsha Poland and Matt Knox will be competing in Boston for a chance to win the national championship and a trip to Munich.
Guests visited participating businesses throughout the weekend, getting their passports stamped, attending beer tastings, restaurant specials, apple festival and wagon rides. Closing ceremonies were held at the Chamber of Commerce to draw for passport prizes and to honor brat, strudel and stein hoisting champions.
