LEWISTON – Recreation Director Maggie Chisholm was lauded by Lewiston Mayor Laurent F. Gilbert Sr., on behalf of himself and the Lewiston City Council, after she received an “Exemplary Leadership Award” from the fourth annual Community Exchange, hosted by the Maine Community Justice Projects, Weed and Seed, and Volunteers of America. Chisholm received a standing ovation.

Gilbert praised Chisholm’s leadership in chairing the Androscoggin County Safe Haven Committee and chairing the countywide Weed and Seed Steering Committee.

He said, “Maggie, we applaud your passion and commitment to these initiatives. Safe Haven and Weed and Seed are tremendous assets to this area, and we extend our congratulations and appreciation for your successful efforts that are, indeed, making a difference.”

Chisholm responded by recognizing those in the audience who have been supportive of her efforts, including Deputy Public Works Director Megan Bates, Deputy Director of Recreation Joline Banaitis, Recreation Department Administrative Assistant Claudette Jordan, and daughters, Rory and Victoria.

Chisholm also praised Police Chief Bill Welch for introducing her to the two initiatives, and mentioned some of the groups she works with in her chairwoman’s capacity: River Valley Village, Volunteers of America, Lewiston Housing Authority, Auburn Housing Authority, Lisbon Police and Recreation departments and the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department.
