Region 9 director resigns

MEXICO – Region 9 School of Applied Technology Director David Driscoll submitted his resignation Tuesday night following a 15-minute closed session, effective June 30.

Driscoll, who had been in retirement, began working for the local vocational school in December 2004.

“My intention was to stay for two or three years,” he said Tuesday night.

Driscoll, who lives in Westbrook, had accepted leadership of the local school after former director Deborah Guimont left for a similar position in southern Maine.

Driscoll is pleased that his tenure has ended on a positive note, with the passage of a $4.9 million renovation/addition project for the school.

“I wanted to see this through,” he said.

The vocational region’s Personnel Committee will meet later in the week to discuss the resignation and to make plans for advertising for a new director. Driscoll has also asked for a reduction in hours for the remaining five months of his contract, which is a topic the Personnel Committee will also discuss.

Driscoll had served as a director of a vocational center in Calais where he helped oversee the construction of a new vocational school prior to coming to the area.
