Remembrance Walk announced

AUBURN —  The second annual Hospice House 5K Race and Remembrance Walk will be held on Sunday, May 23. Net proceeds will benefit the KMW Fund of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice which supports care for patients with limited or no health insurance at the Hospice House.

The KMW Fund was established in 2008 by the family of Kathleen Whalen who was cared for at the Hospice House. While at the facility, Whalen noticed that there were patients whose health insurance was not as generous as hers and she wanted to find a way to help. Following her death, her family established the fund to assist in providing the same high quality care to those with limited health insurance.

This year’s event will incorporate a 1K kids Fun Run, a certified 5K race and a Remembrance Walk. Event day registration and final check-in for all of the day’s events will begin at 8 a.m. at the Hospice House. The Fun Run will be held at 8:30 and the 5K race will start at 9.

The race route will begin on North River Road (near the intersection with Stetson Road), following to Cross Street then circling back ending at the Hospice House at 236 Stetson Road. The walk will begin from the Hospice House right after the start of the road race. The walkers will go down Stetson, turn onto North River Road and then follow the road race course out and back.

Following the race and walk, awards will be presented to the top runners in specific age groups and the walking teams.

The purpose of the Remembrance Walk is to allow families and friends to join together with the Whalen family in the memory of a loved one to help less fortunate patients at the Hospice House. Walkers are encouraged to form teams to raise funds. Every team member does not have to walk and each team is allowed to elect to have a team captain walk the distance. However, many of the people who participated last year to honor the memory of a loved one enjoyed walking as a group.

Information on the event and forming a team can be found at Recognition will be given to the team that has the most number of members participating on event day and the team that raises the most amount of money.

Preregistration for all activities, including the kids Fun Run, is encouraged. Event fee is $18 for the race and walk to those who preregister and $22 on the day of the event. There is no fee for the Fun Run. Event T-shirts will be given to the first 100 paid registrants for either the race or the remembrance walk.

Registration forms are available at the AHCH Lewiston office on Strawberry Avenue, at the Hospice House, Camden National Bank, The Medicine Shoppe, Pineland Lumber and at many other supporting area businesses.
