For the first time in the organization’s 10-year history, the Maine Renegades won the highly competitive Valley League championship. The Renegade Squirts team coached by Adam Nicholas went into the playoffs as the No. 4 seed and emerged victorious.
Local players on the team are Dustin Larochelle and Cole Ouellette of Lewiston, Gordie Ide and Deryk Belanger of Minot, Hunter Mahoney of Durham and Cody Doyon of Sabattus.
The Renegades beat New Hampshire East, 5-3, last Wednesday night in the quarterfinals at Haverhill, Mass.
On Saturday the Renegades stunned top-seeded Concord, winning 2-1 in overtime, and then toppled No. 3 Casco Bay, 5-1, to win the Valley League’s National Conference. Prior to Saturday, the Renegades were a combined 0-6 against both Concord and Casco Bay on the season.
Brimming with confidence, the Renegades rolled out to a 6-0 lead Sunday over Waltham, Mass., and sewed up the championship with a 7-2 win.
“Once again this was a total team effort,” coach Adam Nicholas said. “I’m so proud of my team. They did everything a coach could ask for and more. This Valley League Championship is the culmination of nine months of hard work. I knew this was a championship team. They just needed to believe they could be the best.”
