Renteria ties Atlanta record for hitting streak to start season

ATLANTA (AP) – Braves shortstop Edgar Renteria tied an Atlanta record when he extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a first-inning single against Colorado on Monday night.

Renteria’s streak is the longest to start a season for the Braves since Felipe Alou hit safely in 16 straight at the beginning of 1966, the team’s first year in Atlanta.

Renteria, acquired from Boston during the offseason after Rafael Furcal signed with the Dodgers, sandwiched his streak around missing nine games with a strained rib cage muscle.
