SCARBOROUGH — Richard E. Steele, 71, of Cumberland Foreside, died Tuesday, May 11, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a nine-month struggle with cancer.
He served as dean of admissions and financial aid at Bowdoin College from 1991 to 2001 and again as acting dean in 2005 to 2006. He began his 40-year career in college admissions and college counseling in 1962 as assistant to the dean of admissions at Bates College. He later served at Vassar College, the University of Vermont, Carleton College and Duke University, before returning to Maine.
He was born in Lewiston to Dr. Charles W. and Mabelle (Cram) Steele, and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1957. He earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard University in 1961, and went on to earn a master’s degree in English at the University of Vermont (1966) and a Ph.D. in English at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1972).
