CANTON — Two men were charged with animal cruelty Wednesday after officials found a dead dog and two emaciated ones at their house at 134 Campbell Road.
The names of the two who were issued court summonses were not released by Oxford County Detective Thomas Harriman.
Harriman and Animal Control Officer Tracy Wing went to the residence after an anonymous caller expressed concern about the welfare of four dogs at the home. The caller said one of the dogs might be dead.
Harriman said he and Wing contacted three residents at the property Wednesday afternoon to question them.
"They were all cooperative with us," he said.
Wing said an aggressive adult male pit bull and a 9-month-old female bull mastiff were on a back porch and both were emaciated.
"You could tell they had not been fed or taken care of," Wing said. "You could see about every bone in their body."
She said she believed the dogs had occasionally been fed white rice and table scraps. Wing also said the porch was covered with feces and urine.
"There were definitely some housekeeping issues," Wing said.
The dogs were turned over to Wing by the owner and taken to a shelter.
Harriman said each man who was summoned to court was charged with one count of animal cruelty.
A dead pit bull was also found on the property, and further charges are pending, he said.
Wing said a fourth dog was unaccounted for, and was believed to be deceased.
Wing and Harriman said there was no evidence any of the dogs were involved in dogfighting.

If a summon was issued, then
If a summon was issued, then it is a public record, and the names should be easily obtainable by a SJ reporter, if she wants to make the effort.

Oh ya and I think they should be given the same treatment as the dogs....tied up to the back porch with no food or water sitting in their own crap and urine left to die!

Another thing I neglected to comment on. The article states, “The names of the two who were issued court summonses were not released by Oxford County Detective Thomas Harriman”. WTF is up with that? What kind of nonsense is that when there’s fear of reporting the names of the abusers? I find it pathethic that Detective Thomas Harriman was apparently afraid to disclose their names. After all, they were adults. He should find a different line of work if he scares that easily. What this state needs is a registry for animal abusers, similar to the sex offender registry. Let’s be mindful of the fact that animal offenders are also a real threat to people. Having such a registry would help animals and people against future criminal attacks. If people are made aware of animal abusers in their vicinity, they’ll be able to take preventative measures to protect themselves and others from these abusers.

Scumbags like them should be tortured to death. God bless the anonymous caller who reported this heartbreaking cruelty. In fact, I think people who are aware of animal abuse and say nothing should be charged too. Why scumbags kill or torture defenseless animals is hard for me to understand. It’s becoming more widespread and unless lawmakers, law enforcement, judges, and citizens get more involved and demand stiffer penalties for animal abusers, it isn’t likely to stop anytime soon, and will only get worse. It’s a no-brainer; society should not tolerate animal cruelty, period. Why aren’t leaders in government pushing for harsher penalties to send the message that abuse of sentient beings will not be tolerated? Don’t any of them have a conscience for sentient beings? It’s also a well-known fact that there’s a correlation between animal cruelty and violence against people. “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated” ~ Gandhi (1869-1948). Since we share this planet with animals, we should treat them with the kindness and respect they deserve. In doing so, we will be improving their lives, and ours as well.

These people should get more than a slap on the wrist for their wrong doing. They should also never be allowed to have another animal of any kind. Unfortunately 9 out of 10 times this kind of ppl only get a slap on the wrist and are told not to do it again.
