Rock Cats sink Dogs

PORTLAND (AP) – Errol Simonitsch pitched seven-plus shutout innings and Matt Moses homered and drove in three runs as the New Britain Rock Cats beat the Portland Sea Dogs 4-0 Friday in the Eastern League.

Moses’ RBI single in the first inning plated the only run New Britain would need, then his two-run blast into the right-field seats made it 3-0 in the third.

The Rock Cats (21-23) added a run in the eighth, on a walk, J.R. Taylor’s single and Denard Span’s sacrifice fly.

Simonitsch (4-3) pitched a masterful game, striking out six, walking none and allowing only three singles before being pulled in the eighth due to injury.

Levale Speigner completed the team shutout. Portland starter David Pauley (2-3) took the loss.

The Sea Dogs (25-19), whose five-game winning streak was snapped, did not advance a runner beyond first base.
