RSU 9 board reinstates student

FARMINGTON — Regional School Unit 9 directors voted 8-2 Tuesday to allow an eighth-grade student to enter ninth grade with a transition plan in place, Superintendent Tom Ward said.

Directors Jennifer Pooler of New Sharon and Keith Swett of Wilton opposed the vote, he said.

The student was one of two middle school students accused of distributing marijuana on school property and who were suspended at the end of the school year pending a school board hearing.

The board decided to allow the student to stop the 10-day suspension issued at the end of the year and re-enter school because of many issues that were beyond the student’s control, Ward said.

The student had served three days of the suspension before school ended in June.

In July, the board decided to require the other student to serve the seven days remaining of his 10-day suspension and added 23 days to it. It will be served in school when classes resume. An individual education plan is required for the student to resume regular classes.
