Rumford American Legion seeking sock donations for homeless veterans

RUMFORD — The Rumford American Legion Post 24 is collecting socks of all sizes until March to aid homeless veterans and their families, Post Commander Tricia Thurston said Monday afternoon.

Thurston explained that the idea for collecting socks for homeless veterans is part of the “Warm Feet” campaign that Sanford Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1044 came up with.

“It was their idea, but we’re supporting their efforts,” Thurston said. “We always do anything we can to help out veterans, and the families of veterans, even if it’s something like collecting new socks to keep them warm.”

Thurston said that she set up a drop box at the Rumford Legion building at 184 Congress St., where residents can drop off new socks of any size.

“We’re not just looking for adult-sized socks,” Thurston said. “We’re collecting socks for the family members of homeless veterans, too. We’ll take large, medium or small socks.”

The American Legion will collect socks until the beginning of March, Thurston said.

“After that, we’re going to deliver the socks we have to the families,” Thurston said. “Right now, we have a slow start, so we’re looking for any residents looking to help to bring in some socks.”
