Rumford’s Healthy Hearts 5K benefit a hit

RUMFORD — The River Valley’s inaugural Healthy Hearts 5K Run/Walk hit on all cylinders on Sunday, May 15.

Despite inclement weather, 90 participants took part in the River Valley Healthy Communities fundraising event to benefit the American Heart Association. The fundraiser netted approximately $1,800 for the AHA.

“It was an amazing turnout for a great cause,” Sandra Palmer, event organizer and administrative assistant at Healthy Communities, said.

“We had people of all age groups,” Palmer said, “from 7 years old to one older gentleman who refused to give his age.”

The 5K Run/Walk, which began at 11 a.m. Sunday, took participants through some of the more picturesque parts of Rumford.

The event would never have been so successful without the help of many volunteers, according to Palmer. Among those she cited for commendation were two of the biggest sponsors — Irving Forest Products and Arsenic and Old Lace Antique Store, as well as Pizza Hut and the Mountain Valley High School Peer Helpers.

Palmer, thrilled with this year’s turnout, looks forward to next year’s event.
