S. Madeline Stuart

WALES — S. Madeline Stuart, 81, died Friday, April 2, at her home on Pond Road, surrounded by her family.
She was born on May 14, 1928, in Wales, the daughter of Charles O. R. and Annie M. (Steward) Sherman. She attended school in Wales and was a 1947 graduate of Edward Little High School in Auburn.
On June 17, 1961, in Wales, she married Merton H. Stuart. He passed away on Sept. 5, 1999.
Mrs. Stuart worked at Dori Shoe for many years and retired from there in 1980.
Madeline was a founding member and Deacon of the Wales Presbyterian Church. She also taught Sunday school and worked on many church suppers.
She was a 50-year member of Wales Grange No. 40, Androscoggin Grange No. 1 and State and National Granges.
She is survived by two brothers, Robert Sherman of Wales, and Ralph Sherman and his wife, Dorothy, of Litchfield; her godchild, Susan Drouin, of Lisbon; a “grandson,” Matthew Drouin; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Merton; her brothers, Walter, Stacy, William, Cecil and Charles Sherman; and her sisters Marion Johnson, Lilla King, Helen Lyman, Beatrice Danforth, Ruth Snyder, and Emma and Dorothy Sherman.
