Salmon is an American mix

Within the last year, there was a large controversy between the governments of Maine and the United States about the “corruption of the native salmon” in Maine rivers.

In the April 12 edition of the Sun Journal, in the “Looking back” column, it states that 500,000 fry were shipped from the Pacific to the Atlantic; 250,000 were to be released in the Kennebec and Androscoggin rivers, and 250,000 were to be released into the Penobscot later.

That was 100 years ago. My question is: what native salmon stock was the recent argument about? It seems to me that, like everything else American, it is already a mix.
