Sayward E. Pillsbury


RUMFORD – Sayward Eugene Pillsbury, 82, of Dixfield and Rangeley died on April 26, at the Rumford Community Home.

He was born, the son of Rolla and Irene (Kempton) Pillsbury in Rangeley on Nov. 25, 1923. He attended the Rangeley schools and served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 to 1945 in England. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion.

He married Mildred Wright on Aug. 21, 1949 in Rumford. He worked as a greenskeeper and as a golf pro at Oakdale Country Club in Mexico and at Mingo Springs Golf Course in Rangeley retiring in 1997. He gained many lifelong friends durring his years as a golf pro. He enjoyed playing golf, watching TV sports and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Cleon Fletcher, of Dixfield; three grandchildren, Eugene Fletcher and his wife, Patricia, of Dixfield, Daniel Fletcher and his wife, Deborah, of Jefferson and Rebecca Fletcher of Farmington; two great-granddaughters, Devon and Megan Fletcher of Dixfield; a sister, Jean Hitchcock of Dover-Foxcroft; a sister in-law, Dorothy Pillsbury of Rangeley.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred of 49 years; an infant son; a brother, Ardean Pillsbury; and a sister, Elaine Brownlee.
