LEWISTON — The U.S.S. Canberra Association, in conjunction with area veterans organization, will conduct a service in recognition of Armed Forces Day, at noon Saturday, May 15, in Veterans Memorial Park.
In 1950, the President of the United States proclaimed the third Saturday of May as Armed Forces Day, which marks the unification of the military services and the creation of the Department of Defense as provided for the National Security Act of 1947.
The program will open with the Pledge of Allegiance and the assembly will sing the “Star-Spangled Banner.” The Rev. Dr. Steven Crowson, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, will give the invocation. Jerry DerBoghosian will read a proclamation on Armed Forces Day. The Rev. Richard Bolduc will give the benediction followed by “Taps” and the singing of “God Bless America.”
The service will be held rain or shine and it is open to the public.
