LEWISTON — TV journalist Jane Pauley, Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Strout and internationally known climate scientist James McCarthy will be among those speaking and receiving honorary degrees when Bates College’s 144th commencement ceremony is held Sunday.
The ceremony, which is open to the public, will start at 10 a.m. on the college Quad, at Campus Avenue and College Street. The event concludes the undergraduate careers of 456 members of the Bates Class of 2010, who represent 33 states and 33 countries.
In addition to Pauley, Strout, a 1977 Bates grad, and McCarthy, other speakers and honorary degree recipients will be: Rennie Harris, the choreographer who brought hip hop to the mainstream world of dance, and Teresa Woodruff, a researcher responsible for pioneering work in the care of women who will become infertile due to cancer treatment.
In case of rain, the commencement will be moved into Merrill Gymnasium, 141 Russell St.
