Sex offender sentenced for not registering

PARIS – A Waterford man who pleaded guilty to not registering as a sex offender was sentenced to 14 days in jail and a year’s probation.

Roland Smith III, 41, was sentenced Tuesday in Oxford County Superior Court to serve two weeks of a one-year sentence.

Court records show addresses for Smith in Waterford and Portland. State records show, however, that he registered as a sex offender Jan. 5 with a Paris address.

Oxford County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Thomas Harriman arrested Smith at his camper at 385 Mill Hill Road, Waterford, last Sept. 19.

According to court records, Smith was convicted on the same charge Feb. 8, 2005, in Uxbridge, Mass., and Dec. 7, 2004, in Sutton, Mass.

According to the state’s sex offender registry Web site, Smith was convicted in Massachusetts for indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.
