Shannon named to rookie ream


PORTLAND – Portland Pirates forward Ryan Shannon has been named as one of six players selected to the 2005-06 American Hockey League All-Rookie Team.

In his first pro season out of Boston College, Shannon has been one of the Pirates’ offensive stars. He is currently second in the AHL’s rookie scoring race with 80 points (24 goals, 56 assists) and currently ranks ninth among AHL scoring leaders. In addition, Shannon ranks first among AHL rookies in assists and plus/minus (+26), which is also second in the entire league.

The Pirates return to action Friday on the road against the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7 p.m. The Pirates can clinch their first-ever Atlantic Division title with a victory.

LHS swimmers earn honors

LEWISTON – The Maine Interscholastic Swim League announced their annual Maine Academic All-State Swim Team for the 2005-06 season Wednesday. Five swimmers from Lewiston High School were named to the team, the second highest number of honorees of any school in the state.

Student-athletes who were recognized include Lukas Akerley, Nicole Grant, Isla Hansen, Mina Moore and Caitlin Robitaille.
