SKOWHEGAN — A Skowhegan homeless shelter and the town have come up with a way for the facility to pay a $4,000 sewer hookup fee.
Some residents of the Skowhegan Miracle Homeless Shelter have started working for the town, and will get paid $7.50 an hour until the bill is paid.
The Board of Selectmen last week voted to increase the shelter’s sewer payments from $150 to $250 per month. The increase came because the number of men at the shelter increased, leading to higher sewer flow capacity.
The shelter director told the Morning Sentinel the shelter cannot afford $250 per month and wants to do its fair share for the town.
Town officials say it could take as little as two weeks to pay the bill.
