Shelter taking entries for ‘Not a Dog’ contest

AUBURN – The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society has begun collecting submissions for its new “I am Not a Dog” Photo Contest, to honor the many other types of furry, feathered and scaly friends (cats, gerbils, guinea pigs, birds, rats, fish, lizards) who share our lives.

Judging will be held as part of the Strutt Your Mutt Dog Walk and Pet Festival on Saturday, May 20, at Railroad Park in Lewiston. Photos must be received by Monday, May 15.

Photos will be judged in four categories: Best All-Around, Funniest, Cutest and Biggest Ham. Winners will receive a $25 gift certificate courtesy of the Kennel Shop.

Winners’ names will be featured in the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society’s newsletter and winning photos will posted on the Web site.

Each contest submission requires a $5 donation and the following information printed on the back of each photo: pet’s name, owner’s name, address and phone number. Dogs are not allowed to enter.

Send only photos that do not need to be returned to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, Attn: Photo Contest, 3312 Hotel Road, Auburn, ME 04210. Judging will take place at 11:30 a.m.; winners need not be present to win.

The Humane Society provides a safe haven for approximately 3,600 sick, homeless and abused animals a year. Primary support for the shelter comes from fundraising events and donations of residents.

The society is located at 3312 Hotel Road. Anyone interested in learning more about volunteering at the shelter or adopting an animal should call 783-2311 or visit the Web site at
