BETHEL – Earle G. Shettleworth Jr., director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and the state historian, will be the featured speaker at the first of the 2006 series of lectures celebrating the 40th anniversary of the society’s founding in 1966.

A frequent lecturer and writer on Maine’s past, Shettleworth will speak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 1, on “Silent Sentinels: Maine’s Civil War Monuments.” The lecture is free and open to all.

Bethel’s Civil War monument was dedicated in 1908. There are a number of monuments throughout the state, several of which have been moved to other sites in their towns.

Only Brownfield’s monument portrays a specific soldier of the War. This and more will be discussed in what will be a sequel to the society’s earlier winter/spring course on Maine and the Civil War.
