MEXICO — Mya Lennon, 6, has been named Miss Mexico 2018 for her participation in the town’s bicentennial events this year.

She was presented with a tiara and handmade sash by Judy Breau Kennedy, who was crowned Miss Mexico 1968 during the town’s sesquicentennial year.

“I wore this crown for 50 years,” Kennedy told Lennon at an appreciation dinner for bicentennial committee volunteers Oct. 21. “For it to go on for another 50 years, you’d only be 56 years old. Would you wear it for 50 years?”

Mya said she didn’t think so.

“You could just carry it around,” Kennedy told her.

Kennedy wore her crown and sash during the bicentennial parade in August. She asked Bicentennial Committee President Sheryl Briggs about carrying on the Miss Mexico tradition. Briggs suggested naming Mya, the committee’s mascot at events marking the 200th year since Mexico’s incorporation.
