Skier hurt in fall at Sunday River

NEWRY – A 48-year-old man was taken by medical helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston on Wednesday afternoon after falling while skiing at Sunday River Ski Resort, ski area spokesman Alex Kaufman said later that afternoon.

The skier suffered a reported neck injury.

Kaufman said the man “just fell in the middle of the trail on Broadway,” a beginner trail by the bottom of South Ridge on Barker Mountain.

“It was a trail he’d skied before earlier in the day,” he added.

The resort’s last day is Sunday, April 16, although Kaufman said free skiing is being offered on Patriot’s Day, Monday, April 17.

Due to the lackluster winter, Kaufman said the resort never opened all of its trails, but did open trails that were covered by snowmaking.

Tuesday’s winter storm dumped 5 inches at the bottom of the resort’s mountains and 10 inches on top.

“It was pretty amazing skiing,” he added.
