Small business group official to address club

LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club will meet at noon Thursday, May 11, at the Ramada Inn when the New England regional administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, Charles E. Summers Jr., will speak.

Summers was sworn in as the regional administrator on March 7, 2005. He manages district offices in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont and has oversight of the financing, marketing and outreach efforts in the six-state region.

Prior to assuming that position, Summers served as state director for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe from 1995 to 2004. He served as an adviser and advocate for Mainers who needed help navigating federal agencies.

In 1990 Summers was elected to the State Senate representing District 31. He served on the Joint Standing Committees on Legal Affairs and Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Upon re-election in 1992, he served as the ranking member on the Joint Standing Committee on Taxation.

Summers grew up in the family’s hotel business and later managed motels in Bangor and South Portland as well as owning and operating his own small businesses.

Summers and his wife, Ruth, reside in Scarborough with their two children.

Anyone wishing to hear the speaker or to learn more about Rotary is welcome to attend. Weekly buffet luncheons are $8 a person. Access the club’s Web site at or call 333-3049 for more information.
