Sock hop to benefit trip to SkillsUSA

LOCKE MILLS — A sock-hop dance fundraiser will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, May 14, at the American Legion. Dan Richards will be the  DJ. There will be 50/50 raffles, water for sale and door prizes. Admission will be $7 per person.

This dance will benefit Myriah Porter’s trip to the SkillsUSA national competition in Kansas City. Myriah is a junior at Dirigo High School, as well as a student in the Firefighter 1 and 2 class at Foster Tech Center in Farmington.

She has been volunteering at Peru Fire Department for five years and has been an active member for three years. After graduating from fire science and paramedicine, she plans on working full-time at a fire department in Maine.

On March 10, she competed in a statewide SkillsUSA competition for firefighting. She placed first in the state, giving her a chance to compete nationally June 20-25 in Kansas City, Mo. In order to compete in Nationals, she needs to raise $1,200.
