Spring swim registration is open

AUBURN – The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA has begun registration for its next session of swim lessons. Lessons will begin the week of May 1. The YMCA offers the following classes: Parent and Tot (6 to 18 months), Water Babies (18 to 24 months), Tiny Tots (ages 2 to 5), youth progressive lessons (6 and up), and adult swim lessons.

Parent and Tot is designed to introduce infants to the water. A parent is required to participate. Class is scheduled for 8:30 to 9 and 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturdays.

Water Babies is a 15-minute class catering to the timid new swimmer and has a 1:1 child/instructor ratio. Classes are held once a week, from 10 to 10:15 a.m. Mondays or Wednesdays.

The Tiny Tot program is designed for those ages 2 to 5 and is geared toward teaching them to swim and feel safe in and around the water. Classes are offered at various times on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings, in the afternoon Thursdays, and evening classes on Monday.

Advanced Tiny Tot classes are held at 7 p.m. Mondays, 10:15 a.m. Wednesdays, 1 p.m. Thursdays and 10 a.m. Saturdays. All classes run for 30 minutes.

Youth progressive lessons are for children ages 6 and up. The national YMCA swim lesson program is designed to improve children’s swimming skills, teach new skills, work on endurance and stroke techniques, as well as survival skills.

Children will be placed in a class based on their swimming level as follows: Polliwog or Guppy, Tuesdays or Thursdays 6 to 6:45 p.m. or Saturdays 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.; Minnow, Tuesdays or Thursdays 6:45 to 7:30 p.m.; Fish, Tuesdays or Thursdays 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. or Saturdays 11:15 a.m. to noon; Flying Fish, Wednesdays 6 to 6:45 p.m. or Saturdays 11:15 to noon; Shark, Wednesdays 6 to 6:45 p.m.

Class size is limited. Registration is taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants must be YMCA members. A yearly (social) membership for those ages 5 and under is $20; a youth membership is $45. All the above classes have a $45 program fee.

Adult swim lessons are offered Fridays 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. Nonmembers must pay a $20 adult social membership fee (good for a year). All participants must pay the $45 program fee for the eight-week session.

The YMCA is also holding registration for its water exercise programs. Water aerobics classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. and Mondays through Fridays 8 to 8:45 a.m. Classes are free for those with a YMCA full privilege membership. Nonmembers must pay a $20 adult membership fee and a $65 program fee for the eight-week session.
