LEWISTON – A fire that started on the second floor of the Hill Mill late Wednesday was quickly doused by a sprinkler system.
Firefighters went to the building near Canal and Chestnut streets at about 11 p.m. when smoke was seen pouring from the building.
Firefighters who first entered found a lot of smoke but the flames had been snuffed out by the sprinklers, fire officials said.
The fire started on the second floor above Action Screen Printing, a business at ground level on Chestnut Street. It was not clear whether the space on the second floor was also used by the business.
Firefighters said the floor beneath the sprinklers was covered with water. Crews were devising a way to clear the water while an investigation into the cause of the blaze got under way.
Fire Inspector Paul Ouellette entered the building at about 11:30 p.m. to begin searching for the cause. He was expected to be at the mill into Thursday morning.
