St. Martin de Porres receives gift

LEWISTON – St. Martin de Porres Residence was selected to receive a $2,050 gift from the Ursuline Sisters of the Roman Union on the occasion of their founder’s 200th anniverary of her ascension to sainthood. Saint Angela Merici was canonized on May 24, 1807.

Saint Angela Merici founded the international Order of Ursulines in 1535 in Brescia, Italy. Their mission is to bring the Gospel to all agents of peace through justice, both locally and globally. They are scattered throughout the world teaching, ministering to the poor and marginalized, working in parishes, retreat centers as well as spiritual direction, counseling and pastoral care.

St. Martin is one of two organizations in Maine to receive such a gift.

This gift was made possible through the intervention of Sr. Martha-Helen Thibodeau, who is a volunteer at St. Martin’s Bargain Basket.

The other recipient is the Muskie Center in Waterville, where Sr. Theresa Pelletier works with Alzheimer’s patients and handicapped persons.
