Stafford service set for Saturday


RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) – The late U.S. Sen. Robert Stafford’s family has invited the public to a memorial service this weekend at which some of the state’s top political leaders will speak, his former chief of staff said Tuesday.

Stafford died Dec. 23 at the age of 93 . His family asked that the public be invited to Saturday’s service, said Neal Houston.

Stafford had a distinguished public service career beginning as Rutland city attorney that led to service as governor, congressman and senator. He retired from the Senate in 1988.

Houston said Gov. Jim Douglas, Sen. Patrick Leahy and retiring Sen. Jim Jeffords have all been invited to speak on Saturday.

The service is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Grace Congregational United Church in Rutland.
