State House election shapes up in Lisbon

LISBON — Republicans agreed Tuesday to pick Rick Mason as their candidate in a Nov. 7 special election to fill the state House seat left vacant by the death this month of his wife, Rep. Gina Crafts Mason.

Their son, Sen. Garrett Mason, R-Lisbon, said he is thrilled his father is going to run for the 56th District seat. He said his mother would be proud.

Democrats may nominate Scott Gaiason as their standard bearer. The retired building contractor ran last year in an unsuccessful bid in the GOP-dominated district.

Other contenders are possible.

Lisa Ward, chair of the Lisbon Democratic Committee, said Gaiason “brings a strong voice and a vision for Lisbon.”

“To get Augusta to listen to working people, we need to start sending working people to Augusta,” Gaiason said.

Lisbon Democrats will formally select their candidate at a caucus slated for 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at the Lisbon Town Office.
