State officials open investigation into weekend jail suicide

AUBURN — Investigators from the Maine Department of Corrections and Maine State Police are opening their investigation into the weekend suicide of an inmate at the Androscoggin County Jail.

Sheriff Guy Desjardins said that officials from Androscoggin County will be meeting with state investigators Monday. The investigation is standard procedure to determine how an individual under observation could succeed in such an act. Corrections officers inside the jail discovered the man Saturday afternoon after he hung himself with pieces of a ripped bedsheet. The man was not classified as a suicide risk, but he was under observation because corrections officers suspected he was not taking his prescribed medication.

Desjardins declined to release the man’s name, saying that he wanted to make sure all of his family members had been notified.
