Stephen L. Chandler


PORTLAND – Stephen Leslie Chandler, 37, of Biddeford, died Saturday, May 20, at Mercy Hospital.

Stephen was born Oct. 11, 1968, in North Conway, N.H., the son of Irving and Phyllis (Walker) Chandler. Mentally challenged his whole life, he spent his first 12 years residing with his parents in Lovell, the next 22 years with his caregivers, Evelyn and Allan Sawyer of South Portland, and the past three years at his group home in Biddeford.

Stephen attended the following schools: Reverence of Life in North Conway, N.H., Development Center in Chocorua, N.H., The Guy Rowe Annex in Norway, and the Woodford West and the Morrison Development Center, both in Portland.

He had a great affection for his group home and his roommates, Richard and Harry. Stephen had a great love for the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, walking on the beach, swinging, and music. He was always ready for a ride in the van on a Sunday afternoon. Stephen was loved by his family, caregivers and everyone his life touched.

His surviving family includes his mother of Fryeburg; and two sisters, Kathleen Adams and Deborah Jones, both of Stoneham.

He was predeceased by his father; and two sisters, Norma and Paula.
