TURNER — Sterling C. Hinkley, 76, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 12.

He was born June 25, 1941, in Lewiston, the youngest of four sons of Edward B. and Myrna (Record) Hinkley. He started school at Upper Street School, and graduated from Leavitt Institute in 1959 and Farmington State Teachers College in 1963. On April 24, 1976, he married the former Rose Ellen Dow and together they raised two children.

He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force on Feb. 24, 1964. A time of holding different jobs followed until starting work at W.D. Matthews Machinery Co., working there until retirement in December 2006.

Sterling was always interested in local history and genealogy and wanted to know his family history. He had volunteered at the Turner Town Office putting vital records of the town on the computer.

He was a member of the Turner Historical Society. He enjoyed snowmobiling in the late ’60s and ’70s, even being the treasurer of the Turner Ridge Riders for a while. In 1998, he took up ATV riding and enjoyed it for several years, joining the Turner Timberlands ATV Club and being their treasurer. He was a past master of the Turner Grange, past member of the Blake Lodge IOOF, and a 50-year member of the Nezinscot Lodge of Masons. He was a deacon of Turner Village Church for many years and a charter member of the Calvary Baptist Church and a deacon there for a while. He was a member of the East Auburn Baptist Church until his death.

Survivors include his wife, Rose; two children: daughter, Beth Trippeda and her husband, Kyle, and son, Jeff Hinkley; brother, Homer Hinkley and his wife, Maxine; foster sister, Blanche Marquis; sisters-in-law, Christine Hinkley and Glenda Hinkley; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers and his parents.
