AUBURN - A retired priest told police he was unhappy with the woman who accused Lewiston's Mayor Lionel Guay of groping her.

So, shortly after Guay was acquitted on all charges of unlawful sexual touching and assault, the priest sent Danielle Ramon two mailings taking her to task for making the allegations.

In his missives, the Rev. Bertrand Poussard, 64, of Waterville, called Ramon "ugly" and a "bitch." He insinuated that she was fat and a lesbian. He sent her copies of newspaper clippings about the trial, underlining text and making written asides directed at her in the margins.

When interviewed by police, Poussard was contrite.

Auburn police Lt. Jason Moen, chief of detectives, said the case cracked open when diocesean officials passed along information from a source suggesting that Poussard might be responsible for the mailings. Church officials provided samples of Poussard's writing that police compared to the letters mailed to Ramon, of Auburn, Guay's accuser. The similarities prompted police to interview Poussard.

He was cooperative and "quite remorseful" for having sent the clips and letter, Moen said. Poussard told police he knew Guay from growing up in Lewiston. "He was unhappy with the case and decided to express his feelings," Moen said.

Contacted by phone Wednesday, Guay confirmed that he and Poussard had been friends, but the mayor hadn't seen Poussard "in a long time."

Guay announced earlier this week that he was resigning as mayor as of Friday. He cited stress on himself and his family resulting from the sexual touching case.

Local police issued a cease harassment notice Tuesday to Poussard. The notice is only a warning, Moen said. If Poussard engages in any further course of conduct that could be harassing, including writing letters to Ramon or harassing her by phone, he could be charged with the class E misdemeanor of harassment, Moen said. He said he didn't know if Poussard had a criminal record or prior written warnings.

Ramon's mother, Debra, said Wednesday the family was overwhelmed and wasn't commenting immediately.

Bishop Richard Malone, who heads Portland Diocese, had much to say.

"This is not behavior that is acceptable by any priest or any Christian," he said Wednesday in a written release.

Malone said the letters were "hurtful and I am sorry for any harm caused. This was obviously the work of a troubled soul."

He said he planned to bar Poussard from officiating at public Mass in Androscoggin County for "a period of time." He also required "personal remedial action" from Poussard, but declined to give details.

Malone called the Ramon family Wednesday to apologize for Poussard's actions.

Poussard said he met Wednesday with Malone, who instructed him not to say anything.

Poussard was born in Lewiston and ordained in 1967. He served at parishes in Skowhegan, Waterville, Westbrook, Biddeford, Portland, Wells and Auburn. He served as chaplain at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston until 2000, when he took medical leave. He officially retired in February, 2004.

A diocese secretary said Poussard's name was not on any lists of retired priests on call to fill in for official Diocesean duties.

But published report from earlier this month in the Sun Journal said Poussard was assisting a reverend who was officiating at a burial Mass in Lewiston.

Reacting to Poussard's written warning, a spokesman for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests or SNAP said Poussard should be criminally charged.

"It's always hard for victims of sex crimes to come forward," said National Director David Clohessy of St. Louis. "It's even tougher when they're met with harassment."

I also feel others in the area protected Mr Guay, the newspaper did not print several letters to the editors that I know of, none were verbal assults other then to say he was wrong and the trial never should of been here, and what he admitted to was sexual harrasment. no wonder Lewiston has so many sex offenders they see the mayor was able to get away with it, Shame on juriors and shame on the church and charges should be brought against anyone who attacks this girl. When will the victims stop being harrassed and made to feel they did something wrong?

There is obviously more to this story than what the public has been privy to. It was smart for the mayor to step down whether it was for health reasons or not. How can the citizens of Lewiston truly feel confident with a mayor that obviously is not remorseful for his actions.

First of all that priest should be ashamed of himself. How can a man of God think that it is ok for him to pass judgement on that girl? I hope that he finds the help that he needs. As for Lionell Guay. We will never know the truth only Mr. Guay and the party involved will truly EVER know. His stepping down is the right decision and I think that the girl that brought the charges should be commended for her strength. Something like that is not easy to talk about, and nearly impossible to speak in public about. My prayers to her and her family

The actions of the priest are not tolerable, but they are separate from Mr. Guay. Lionel Guay is a respected member of this community and has done much for Lewiston. We must remember that Mr. Guay chose to go before a trial of his peers, a jury, and did not take the easy waay out and ask for a non-jury trial. At a trial by jury, both the accuser and defendent get to interview the potential jurors (through their attorneys) and agree on jurors they feel can review the case and present a true and impartial verdict. The trial was held, and Mr. Guay was found not guilty. We must have faith in our system and believe the jury verdict. The Sun-Journal ran articles after the trial which I felt were unfair to Mr. Guay and to the jury system. The simple fact is a trial by jury wass held and a verdict was rendered. We must accept this and go on with life.

It was nasty for anyone to send the letters to the victim, priest or not..But the harm is much greater when it comes from someone in that position. I hope the family, as well as the previous blogger who was turned off to religion, will look at Bishop Malone's response to the family and the public in general,as the Christian example. The actions of the priest were definitely not Christian.

It's encouraging that diocesan officials passed along the information which cracked this case. The days of the CYA coverup have passed for the Church. Now if only our state officials could see the wisdom of putting truth above their pretense of infallibility in the Dechaine case.

Amazing. Here is a young woman who was trusted and well liked while a student at Edward Little. The consensus here, at Edward Little High School is that if Danielle says this happened, then it did. Her character is not in question here, and now she has been put through hell for telling the truth, and would have avoided this if she had done the wrong thing and kept it to herself. Think about it. Why would Guay retire if he was innocent? Could it be that his own family suspected- and that that there was a ring of truth in the accusation? Regardless, I am not stunned a 'retired Roman Catholic priest' is capable of such a despicable act as religion is not an indication or guarantee of one's morals and ethics.

Just another political and or religious Black Eye for the city of Lewiston. The city image keeps slipping and people wonder why they don't get higher income and better educated people to come to Lewiston and buy property, etc. I can guess and I bet you can too.

I agree with Carol. Let's not blame Fr. Poussard's actions on the fact that he is a Catholic priest. Don't blame Peter for Judas' sins.

…or KP, could be that YOU are clueless??!!! Grabbing a woman's breast is a CRIME whether you are a priest, mayor or a drunk!! And why we are focused on this subject is because IT HITS HOME because it is OUR HOME!! Remember that our justice system is based on REASONABLE DOUBT – which does NOT always equal innocent!! But it does close THIS case, legally. Keep reading the paper KP and I’m sure you can add your idiotic comments to the articles you think are more important!! What gets me about Fr. Poussard is this is a man of God who attempted to crush this young woman’s soul - how could he or anyone justify that?? The good Christian couldn’t have said that he didn’t agree with her and would pray for her – NOPE, he instead became a criminal!!! He is a very sick human being and Bishop Malone needs to go one step further by having him DEFROKED!!! Fr. Poussard has some serious psychological problems that will take years to deal with - Bishop Malone needs to keep this country safe from this person being re-located AGAIN!!

Bishop Richard Malone was correct when he said,"This is not behavior that is acceptable by Christians". Neither is it Christian behaviour for others to make accusatory or malicious comments about others that are in their moment of crisis or sin. Don't kick someone while they're down. Let's remember one of the messages of this Christmas season and try to learn to forgive; especially since all those posting comments were not even the ones wronged by Rev.Poussard. WWJD

good for you Michael to turn the other cheek! It's a passionate subject and people are venting. I am certainly guilty of casting stones in my anger!! I got very long winded trying to address the person who thought it was OK for a drunk to grab a women's breast!! With that said, I will pray for Fr Poussard - VERY, VERY HARD!!

When I heard this story all I could think of was now maybe the people who accused the young lady of making up all the harassment stuff to finally shut up, but apparently I was wrong as many can see something else going on. Bottom line, whether you like it or not, Mr. Guay was found innocent by a trial of his peers in accordance with the laws we all operate under. Some of you consider that fair and some of you think he got away with something. I cahllenge each of you to LET IT GO!

I think that Michael is quite correct. Very well said! We seem to have no problem vilifying Fr. Poussard for vilifying the young woman. It is incumbant on us to forgive him for his deplorable actions. Also, the notion that Bishop Malone needs to defrock Father is simply absurd. This man is in a rather pathetic state, yes, but he's not any of the things that people have accused him of being here. Such ignorance and generalization!

I thought the mayor admitted to the touching but it was his INTENT that was under question? He was found to have no ulterior motive, and thus he was found not guilty of what he was charged with. If he had simply been charged with touching her breast and patting her butt, perhaps the verdict would have been different? Perhaps parents should ask their teen-age daughters (and sons) when they come home from their after school jobs, whether or not the boss gave them a back rub? tried to kiss them? rubbed against them?

Quite a bawdy tale. The mayor and the priest. Like they taught us in the Catholic school, birds of a feather flock together. Who else hangs out with these derelicts?

Indeed. WWJD? He wouldn't be participating in such a petty exchange such as the one Rev. Poussard participated in. He should be ashamed of himself, he should be setting an example. yet another example of not practicing what you preach.
