Six killed in Poland crash

POLAND -- Six people were dead on Christmas Eve after two cars collided on Poland Road.
Police said four people died on impact or shortly after the 12:15 a.m. collision on a stretch of Route 122 between Verrill and Bishop roads.
A fifth person died at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston an hour after the head-on collision, police said. The sixth victim died hours later at the hospital.
Police have identified the driver of a Nissan Altima involved in the wreck as 20-year-old Michael Cournoyer of Auburn.
The passengers in Cournoyer’s vehicle were identified as 20-year-old Jacob Roy of Lewiston, 19-year-old Robert Bruce of Auburn, and 16-year-old Matthew Manley of Lewiston.
That car collided with a Dodge Spirit driven Steven Walton, 27, of Poland, police said. Riding in his car was Walton's 26-year-old girlfriend, Laura Caron, of Poland.
Their dog, a pitbull, also died in the wreck.
Police believe one of the cars skidded out of control on black ice and slid into the path of the oncoming vehicle.
The cars collided after a period of rain that froze to the roadway, creating conditions that were slick and deceiving, police said.
Deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office were called in to assist with the investigation. Police went back to the crash scene at about 1 p.m. and finished with the reconstruction more than two hours later.
The investigation was continuing Sunday night.
"As a standard protocol, alcohol tests will be performed on the two operators as part of the investigation," ASO Detective William Gagne said. "It is still too early to rule on the cause and a final determination may take several weeks to months."
Friends of the victims Sunday afternoon were making hasty arrangements to hold vigils for the deceased.
Police described the Sunday morning crash as one of the worst in recent memory. It was being compared to the October 1993 crash in which four area teenagers were killed and one seriously injured when a tractor trailer drifted into the breakdown lane and plowed into the car occupied by the teens.

He wanted all 6 and clearly must have needed them for an extraordinay mission on the other side. May their spirits abide you and with all that believe in him. May their memories be a constant reminder that each day is a gift, there is no quarantee for tommorrow.
My deepest sympathies for the families and friends. May you find comfort knowing you are richer today having been loved by those that leave us behind. Our day shall come when we will meet again in the sky, and be together again. THis I believe.

Posted By:An Other Mother at December 25, 2006 2:49 PM (Suggest Removal) I feel so blessed to have known at least two of these kids. Matt Manley was one of my neighborhood sons. His parents, brothers, other family members and friends are going through way too much then needed. However, life has tragic moments that we never think can happen to US! Well, it did. It feels like a dream; a nightmare; all surreal. Matt's natural desire to succeed will be forever embedded in us because he made us strive to be better. Matt never tolerated stupidity. He looked out for those he loved and he adored his family. He was just a young man who could have made even more of a difference if given a little longer in life. To all the families: You are in many people's hearts and prayers. Your grief is ours, but we can only imagine what you are going through. This is too close to home. It makes me grab my children a little firmer and it influences me to see every moment as precious as the moment before. I am grateful for John, Matt's twin, who is remaining so strong for his parents. John needs all who love him to be supportive and patient. I miss you, Matt. God Bless all the family members of both vehicles.

Posted By:JANICE at December 25, 2006 5:56 PM (Suggest Removal) Why are you making an assumption that drinking was a factor in this accident? There was nothing in the article that suggests anyone in either car had been drinking. Until that has been proven, nobody should assume this was the case.

But either way I miss the smiles of Matt and Bruce.. all four will be remembered for a long time to come

Posted By:FRANK at December 26, 2006 1:20 AM (Suggest Removal) I hate every time I hear of one of these accidents. My heart go's out to the families.
A little tip for everyone.
When driving at night, or even during the day.
If the temperature is below 35 degrees. Stay alert to the possible dangers.
Black Ice is very dangerous, you can't see it you'll be on dry pavement one minite. Ice the next.
You need to pay attention to your surroundings, the weather and your vehicle.
A good way to test for black ice is not hitting the brakes. If you think you might be on black ice, roll down your window and feel the
BACK side of your outside mirror. Ice will form there first.
If you find yourself on black ice, take your foot off the gas peddle, don't try to slow down, the minite you touch the brakes you lose traction, traction is the only thing that will help you at this time. The importent thing is to slow the momentum. A parked vehicle never hits anything.
Again, I'm so sorry to hear about this tragedy, I hope my little peice of advice atleast helps someone
