3 teens charged in library trashing

Sunday, January 28, 2007

MECHANIC FALLS - Three teens, a girl and two boys, have been charged in connection with a break-in and vandalism spree at the Mechanic Falls Public Library on Tuesday.

The teens, 14, 15 and 17, all from Mechanic Falls, face charges of burglary, theft and aggravated criminal mischief, according to Mechanic Falls Police Chief Jeff Goss. The three, he said, are currently in custody at the Longcreek Youth Development Center in South Portland, and are scheduled to appear before a judge in the 8th District Court in Lewiston on Monday.

The arrests will make it easier for the library's supporters to move forward with fundraising for repairs and the cleanup.

"It makes me feel better," said Nancy Petersons, chairperson of the library's Board of Trustees "It makes it easier to move on."

Meanwhile, she has been heartened by continued offers of help.

On Friday, she was contacted by libraries in Poland and Gray, which both volunteered staff to aid in the cleanup. Town Manager John Hawley has set up a fund at the town office for people to aid in the fix-up, suggested to cost several thousand dollars.

Goss said he expected to receive a list of the stolen items and a damage estimate from the library board on Monday. Initial reports on the incident listed among items stolen a computer and about 100 DVDs. Books, papers and dog biscuits were thrown all over the inside of the library, while the librarian's chair and a nutcracker statue were thrown down a steep embankment onto the ice of the Little Androscoggin that runs behind the facility.

The American Legion Post 150, located just a few doors down from the library, plans to hold a spaghetti supper fundraiser to aid the effort. It is planned for 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under.

Already, the Lewiston and Auburn libraries have opened their doors for Mechanic Falls residents.

"I wish this never happened," Petersons said. Yet, people have surprised her with their caring. "They realize the importance of the library to the community."

Great idea S ! Too many kids clearly don't know that destruction, stealing and volence will never be acceptable. How much have they bragged to others about this caper of theirs? Until they have to clean up the mess behind themslves as well a fine and stiff probation etc these things will continue to happen in our towns.

I agree with S. However, once they are done cleaning up the damage they have done, instead of turning them over the judicial system so that they can be slapped with a tiny fine that Mom and Dad will most likely pay........since they are ALL of working age with a worker permit. How about getting them jobs after school and weekends, say 15 hours a week which would still allow enough time for school and homework, once they get it, every paycheck go towards paying off their little spree of dammage?? Apparently they have enough time to allow for this. I have three teens of my own, two in college and both go to school fulltime, work parttime and STILL have time for friends and social life, the youngest has three weeks to go before old enough to get a part time job. Teens learn best by having to be accountable for their actions. Money is the best language!!! Once they SEE on paper what things cost, attitudes change. Thats whats wrong with our judicial system, we slap them with fines and put them behind bars.....whats there to learn from that? Three free meals, warm bed, cable tv, and not have to pay for it? Once out right back at the same game.

Last week when it happened, this story was top news for the SJ, and everyone had the opportunity to go an tirades against the Police Department for not stopping this vandalism while it was happening. Now that the PD has caught and arrested the people supposedly involved, the story is listed second to last in the Lewiston/ Auburn secton and none of the people who had a problem with the PD have been back to mention anything about the fact that they did do their job and eventaully make arrests. Where are you guys now?

Well, Here we go again. If you whip their sorry backsided, they will holler child abuse. The courts will give them probation and tell them not to do it again. We have no law and order here. I say send them to China or Korea where they can be caned. That would wake them up. I am so disgusted with this judicial system. It makes me sick. They should be made to pay for this sick act. And where are their parents????
