Flick it movie roundup

,
Sunday, March 18, 2007

James Wan has been relatively quiet since helming the first "Saw" movie three years ago. The reigns of that franchise have since been handed off to other less-than-capable-hands, allowing Wan to explore new territory, in this case a horror picture about...a dead ventriloquist and her evil dolls? Seriously? Man, where's Jigsaw when you need him? 1 hr. 30 mins.

"Premonition"

After her husband Jim (Julian McMahon) dies in a car accident, Linda (Sandra Bullock) can barely find the will to get out of bed in the morning. So imagine her shock when Jim suddenly drops back into her life as if nothing had happened. After ruling out scenarios that involve cloning, insanity or the Matrix, Linda decides that she's somehow gained the ability to see into the future and puts all her effort into preventing her husband's accident before it happens. 1 hr. 50 mins.

"I Think I Love My Wife"

Chris Rock co-wrote, directs and stars in this comedy about a happily married family man who catches a case of seven-year itch when he bumps into an old flame. Considering that his wife is Gina Torres (of "Firefly" fame), that "old flame" had better be one stone-cold fox. Otherwise the premise falls apart from the get-go. 1 hr. 30 mins.

"Shooter"

Fresh off his Best Supporting Actor nod for "The Departed," Mark Wahlberg headlines this action flick about an ace marksman who is hired to prevent an assassination attempt only to find himself framed for the crime. Danny Glover and Ned Beatty co-star and "Training Day" helmer Antoine Fuqua directs. Will the "Entourage" cast put in a guest appearance? 1 hr. 40 mins.

"The Wind That Shakes The Barley"

Ken Loach's powerful film about the early years of the Irish Republican Army won the Palme d'Or at last year's Cannes Film Festival. Cillian Murphy and Padraid Delaney play brothers who join the IRA to fight against the occupying British troops. But after an unpopular treaty is signed, the siblings find themselves on opposite sides of the "troubles." 2 hrs. 6 mins.

"Casino Royale"

(2006, Sony, PG-13, $28)

The best Bond flick since the heyday of Sean Connery stars Daniel Craig as a 007 who is both more savage and sensitive than his predecessors. The villain (Mads Mikkelsen) and Bond girls (Eva Green, Caterina Murino) are only so-so but the action scenes will rock your world, especially the one in which Craig chases a suspect (free runner Sebastien Foucan) through the streets of Madagascar. Hang on tight.

Extras: The ninety minutes of special features are divided into three separate programs focusing on Craig, stunts and Bond Girls. Cameras follow the new Bond as he trains in Prague, goes to poker school and meets the press. Craig admits the early criticism got him down. "It did shake me," he says. "But it also spurred me on." While the docs are light on juicy gossip, a number of the actors discuss the secret, after-hours poker games held at producer Michael Wilson's house. "Daniel cleaned me out twice," notes Wilson. "I'm not inviting him back." The most candid feature is "Bond Girls Are Forever," a Maryam d'Abo-hosted segment that includes interviews with scores of Bond babes, including Halle Berry, Honor Blackman, Ursula Andress and Jill St. John. It's like hitting the where-are-they-now? jackpot.
