Ham report stirs 'mess'

LEWISTON - An obscure online parody of the recent hate incident at the Lewiston Middle School - a parody reported as news on a national Fox broadcast Tuesday - launched an immediate avalanche of angry phone calls and ugly e-mails to the school system.

In the parody, the ham steak became a ham sandwich. Fake quotes were attributed to Superintendent Leon Levesque, Stephen Wessler of the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence, and one of the Somali students targeted in the incident.

The post then appeared to legitimize the information by attributing The Associated Press as its source.

Larry Laughlin, chief of bureau for AP in Northern New England, said the parody was "clearly improper use of The Associated Press brand."

"You can't," Laughlin said, "fancifully make up comments and add them to an Associated Press story."

Lawyers for the AP are reviewing the parody post and will take action as appropriate, Laughlin said.

The parody, posted by Nicholas Plagman of Atlanta, Ga., and published Monday on an Associated Press look-alike site called Associated Content, and the resulting comments and posts on that and dozens of other online sites, created tension at the middle school and among parents of students.

"We're in a mess here," Levesque said, that they want to straighten out by talking about the cafeteria incident with students. Students are upset and don't want to talk, he said, because they're worried about harassment.

Following the Fox broadcast, Levesque's office received dozens of angry phone calls and profanity-laced e-mails, made and sent by people all over the country, who charge the school district overreacted to what they believed from news reports to be a ham sandwich tossed at a Somali student.

"Leaving your sandwich on a table is now a crime in Maine?" one e-mail asked. It continued, "This child did nothing illegal in placing his sandwich in front of several intolerant people that will kill YOUR students for sitting at the same table let alone placing a sandwich next to them."

From North Carolina, a e-mailer wrote that he'd read the "news media of your actions with regards to a child leaving a ham sandwich on a table used by Muslim students at one of your schools. Excuse my bluntness, but are you people insane?"

And, in another e-mail, "A ham sandwich is not a hate crime. It's two pieces of bread with a processed meat between them. Stop catering to the less than 1% and offending the other 99%. Please!"

Another e-mail suggested Levesque wasn't qualified to be superintendent of a public school because he "obviously escalated a simple prank into a hate crime."

That's not the case, Levesque said.

The incident, which happened in the school cafeteria on April 11, was considered by school staff to be a hate incident. School resource officer Bill Brochu, according to Principal Maureen Lachapelle, followed police procedure by filing a report "because the ham incident was perceived as a hate/bias crime" by the students.

"The Somali boys said they were offended by it because of their religion," which considers pork unclean, and Brochu "did an investigation and forwarded his report to his supervisor, Adam Higgins," Lachappelle said. From there, the report was sent to the Attorney General's Office for review and to the Androscoggin County District Attorney's Office for review for possible harassment charges.

According to Lachapelle, a student brought a honey-baked ham to school to share with his friends. While they were in the cafeteria, one or more students dared another student (not the one who brought the ham to school) to put the ham on a table in front of five Somali boys. That student took up the dare, and followed through even though his friends immediately tried to talk him out of it. The student "knew it was wrong," Levesque said, while he was doing it.

Lachappelle said the student regrets the incident and his parents have supported the punishment meted by the school district.

The Sun Journal published a story about the incident on April 19 as the lead article on the front page. After Monday's Associated Content posting, the altered story moved rapidly across personal and news sites and was discussed with outrage.

In the parody, Levesque was quoted as saying "These children have got to learn that ham is not a toy, and that there are consequences for being nonchalant about where you put your sandwich."

Wessler was quoted as saying his agency was working with the school to create an "anti-ham 'response plan.'"

Neither man said those things.

Levesque never made any reference to a need to make students feel safe from attacks from any ham product.

The parody also attributed a quote to the student who was targeted with the ham, equating the experience to being "back in Somalia being shot at all over again."

Plagman never spoke to the student, and the student never made that statement.

The Sun Journal attempted to contact Plagman for comment, but he did not respond.

Wessler, who talked to a Texas CBS affiliate and two Fox affiliates Tuesday and has been scheduled to appear on another Fox broadcast today, said, "This kind of distortion by reputable news outlets is destructive."

"Fox has figured out, from the calls we've gotten, that they've made a big mistake," Wessler said.

"This is a wake-up call that the level of hate and anger, among a small population, is vibrant," he added.

Levesque said he was bothered not only that the parody took aim at a sensitive issue in Lewiston, but also that Fox and others reported the information as fact without checking. The national media, Levesque said, sees information posted online and "uses it as gospel."

In this case, reporting false information is getting in the way of the city and the school's continued work to build community understanding and tolerance for immigrants, said Phil Nadeau, Lewiston's assistant city administrator. The parodied news account cast a false impression of an overwhelmingly tolerant city and its population, Nadeau said, and of the Somali population in particular.

"The last thing they want is to be above the fold" of a front page or featured on the evening news, Nadeau said.

Watching the parody and news reports unfold Tuesday, Levesque said is proof media "is interested in entertaining and playing on people's emotions," which gets in the way of building community relations.

Lachapelle said she won't let it get in the way of the disciplined student's return to school, ensuring steps are being made to make sure he feels safe when he comes back.

And what if the ham prank had been directed at an Orthodox Jewish student? No one would have doubted for a second that it was an offensive incident. Deliberately taunting someone over their religious taboos is wrong. No two ways about it. A middle schooler doing it is easily forgivable because kids do such things without thinking them through and that is part of growing up. Adults defending the "prank" because they are full of hate is not.

I am currently in Afghanistain. And several of the Afghans that I work with eat lunch with me. When the chow hall serves ham or pork they eat it with me.And yes they are muslims. The people back in the states that are making a big deal of this are doing so just to get attention. Get over it.

Just to set this incident in proper perspective...NONE OF US ARE SUPPOSED TO EAT PORK PRODUCTS...NOT JEWS, NOT MUSLIMS AND N O T CHRISTIANS! ! ! God's laws, ordinances and statutes are not to be taken lightly and are intended FOR ALL HUMANITY.

I agree with what Debra says. It's just getting to be too much. Our kids can't have prayer time in school or any religious comments in school (remember the whole Separation of Church and State), but theirs can. If, because of their culture, they can't go to school without special modifications, they shouldn't go to public school. Whether its kids being kids or a hate crime or a whatever, bottom line is that is seems the Somali culture is more of a disruption than a positive diversification in this community.

TSS I have to agree with your observation. Unfortunately the introduction of the Somali culture is more of a disruption than a positive diversification. I believe that is because they are (some not all) soaking up the "poor me" attitude of our local government. I feel like it is all about the attention that is being put on them, and how quickly our own turn on us when it comes to rights and responsibilities. Where are the Somali responsibilities? What about fitting in? What about all rules being EQUAL for EVERYONE? I haven't heard any more about the white girl that was assaulted in the bathroom on the same day. How come that wasn't front page news? It's frustrating that the FEW racist people are the only ones heard here. Give me a break, I am not saying send the Somalis back, I'm saying FAIR is FAIR. The same rules should apply for EVERYONE. Not special treatment for some. I guess the old saying, that the loudest squeak gets the oil is true. Maybe we need to have a meeting to discuss these things. I mean truly if you want to solve the problem, then you have to talk about it to the ones that can make changes. Write a letter to your local government.

This is directed to "BottomLine". You say Christians aren't supposed to eat pork products? Isn't that part of the Mosaic Law? Didn't Jesus' sacrifice do away with that law? Get your facts straight please.

Actually ,the benifits of living here should be for LEGAL CITIZENS ONLY! NOT people from other countries. If they want to come here they should learn the language, live by OUR laws and customs. No special treatment.Seperation of church and state is gurantee by our constitution.Pratice any relegion you want to ,but not in our public schools. If a pork product is servrd for lunch you can either eat it or not.Welfare of any type should be for citizens only.If you want to live here be prepared to make your own way or leave.

Dave, the adults are defending the "prank" as a prank because it is just that;a prank. It's because of people like you who goes around screaming "hate crime" every time a situation arises, that keeps the people stirred up.If the Somalies are so offended then why do they eat in our restaurents or even the same rooms where pork is served? They have been babied ever since they came to Lewiston and it will continue until people wake up and realize they are being used.

If I were to say my attorney was drafting up papers to sue BK, Red Robin, LongHorn, McDonalds, Roys all steak Hamurgers and Wendys just to name a few just because they were open on Good Friday and served meat that would sound rediculous. As someone born and raised here in Maine,I've heard people want to change the pledge of allegience because Gods name was in it.Redo the American currency because it said "in God we trust" which I might add they have done. New currency no longer reads in God we trust YET These somalians come here, demand to be "equal" go to the public school AND have their prayer time IN SCHOOL. If they were christian, jewish, monks ect. and asked for a room to pray would never have been taken into concideration. This is America people. These are the laws and if you can obey them and not abuse them then welcome to America. If not, The boat does go both ways and have a safe voyage!!!

The national news media I heard had the situations correctly. Lewiston is a test center for Muslims and how much the muslims will be allowed to get away with. They have pushed hard and have always gotten what they wanted and will continue to do so until we regain our sences and put a stop to it.

Once again, we blow a small incident out of proportion. The kids friends tried to talk him out of it..he knew what he was doing was wrong...his parents and the kid took responsibility for the action. What more is needed, except a genuine apology from the kid. Once again, we make something out of nothing.

Im disgusted that they are going to charge a middle schooler with a hate crime. What is happening to this world? When I was a kid if you pulled a prank you'd likely get called into the principals office and get grounded for a week. Now we're charging 12 year olds with hate crimes?

Doesn’t it seem strange that every time there is an article in the SJ about Muslims our elected politicians, school teachers, and people like Mr. Wessler, who is making a fortune off this Muslim issue, express their views supporting and defending Muslim’s it creates the highest number of blog responses from Lewiston’s citizenry who’s views overwhelmingly disagree? Time for the PC politicians, school teachers, and social workers to take off the blinders. See the Muslims actions and motives for what they are. And what about the little white girl that was accosted and harassed on the same day? Did our brilliant Lewiston School Department report that as a hate crime? Where the students responsible suspended? Did any of the white girl’s terror make the SJ? No she was white nothing special not newsworthy for the SJ.

abdi...if Catholic people wasnt to pray in school, we need to send them to private catholic schools and pay $$$ you say "they" but I'm guessing you mean "WE" as in somalians. Want to pray in school? Form a private school and pay out of your own pockets not get it paid through the state. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Don't like it? move on. Laws are Law and somalians praying at school is breaking the laws. You people are no more important or special than anyone else

LMAO at ham "often disguising itself as a lunch item". The ham by-products served by the lunch staff at LMS are offensive as is. The kid should have added some potatoe puffs to the bag. I do not find the mock article offensive or an attack on Lewiston. I find Section B of the Sunday Sun Journal to be much worse. I find the reaction to be very ironic considering the city school administration is under attack. Kind of like how Larry Raymond was attacked even though his letter was the truth. If you do not like Lewiston, buy yourself a one-way ticket South. Maybe the upset Somali's could head to Crawford Texas. I hear Crawford loves low income, poorly skilled workers. Hey, can we have another 200 person march to rally support for Keleigh Tara's dating pool?

Some good points made here this morning. Once again I urge you all and your family and friends to call or email the elected officials of this great state with the best nickname ever "TAXLAND" and let them know we are not and should not tolerate a law being broken when it comes to prayer in our school systems. Go to Maine.gov and under search: key in your town or city then on the right hand side it will give you all elected officials and I do know Olympia and Susan act right away to look into any issue concerning Maine CITIZENS !!!

I can not believe that we are going to waste all this money investigating the media for reporting news without researching the facts!!! They do it ALL THE TIME! We all need to learn to take any news we hear with a grain of salt because it's always biased. They tell you what they want you to hear and stretch the truth to make people feel for those involved or turn against those that are being accused. You hardly ever read or hear anything bad that the victim may have done, but you hear all sorts of trouble that the accused has been involved in. Open your eyes people! If you want to know the truth about anything, don't look to the media to give it to you... research it yourself. This whole Somali thing has gotten out of hand. Yes there are some that abuse the system, but we have many born and raised citizens that do the same thing. There are many Somalis that have good jobs and are an asset to the community. I do agree that we can not go ballistic every time there's an incident with a Somali. It's just turning the community against each other and that is not what we need. Everyone needs to work together and figure this thing out. It's not going to happen overnight, but it will take a lot of give and take with EVERYONE involved. This is not a one-sided deal here. There... off my soapbox... someone else can have it :p

Trepanation, how can we be in the minority? I am proud to say I am on the side of the religious community who believe we are to "help thy neighbor." These people are not coming across the Canadian border, (as many of my family members did), to find better jobs, they are escaping a genocide. Yes everything about their culture is unlike those in the Auburn-Lewiston community. But so was everything in my Jewish neighbors house when I was growing up in Auburn, who took the time to explain Kosher when I asked, so was the German family next door who gave all 7 kids coffee for breakfast, so was the very religious French Catholic family who prayed before every meal in Latin, so was the fatherless family who used food stamps at the grocery store but only shopped at night because she was afraid her neighbors would see what she had to do to put food on the table. Every family I knew growing up was different than my own and I was raised to not judge them as better or worse, just different. I feel sorry for you who think the Somalia's are someohow taking something from you.....and I project an assimilated community in 20 years with Somali's in the local government and gasp, married to your grandchildren! I pray for that day.....

Brianna, I’ll be gentle because your young, but someone should have told you this a long time ago: there are mean people or every race, religion, nationality etc.- being mean, or nice for that matter, has nothing to do with skin colour., it has to do with something called character. (Something lacking in most of the posters today)- It seems like a fairly simple concept for me to grasp, but obviously some people have never learned the concept. How sad a person’s life must be if they must complain, and complain, and complain incessantly about other people that are different than them. There is absolutely no concrete proof that Somalis are favored over natural born citizens. There are rumours, yes, but I have yet to see legitimate evidence of it.

this is totally ridiculous, what is this world coming to? If this was any other religion you can bet your bottom dollar they wouldn't get all this attention. The somilains have been getting special attention since day one. When is this going to stop? They need to live by our laws and be treated just like any other person who live here. I personally don't care for Ham but, i take no offense when some one eats it around me. I thought this was a free country! Beginning to wonder about that!

Maine has always been somewhat shielded from many of the social problems that plague other regions, e.g. "multiculturalism" and "diversity". And as such hasn't felt the full sting of it's consequences----yet. But give it another couple of decades, sadly to say. The PC "feel good", "let's all give the world a Coke" diversity and multicult rhetoric is a lie. Example after example has shown when you stick people of different ethnics and cultures together, you get social strife and a downward turn in the quality of the area. On the other hand, areas with homogenous populations have far less conflicts and crime. It's a pure fact. I'd like to think the population of Maine is smart enough, and not go with the standard liberal "morally superior than thou" stance when it comes to the future of this state.

I thought everyone in Lewiston had forgotten that ex-welfare mayor of Lewiston Keleigh Tara, her dating pool and Catholic Charities are primarily responsible for the Moslem being imported to Lewiston behind the City Councilor’s backs at the time. Or so the City Councilor’s say now. Please please someone, maybe a “SJ Investigative Reporter?”, ya right, tell me by whom and how much is Catholic Charities paid to bring all this dissension to Lewiston. browneyedhun, I agree with you but why should one religion be allowed in schools but not others? I never agreed to that boy throwing a ham steak at that group of somalians, actually I never knew pork was offensive until the pigs head was rolled into that mosque.Had that NOT made front page news, people would'nt have known it was offensive and like someone mentioned earlier, did that somalian kid do something earlier and the ham steak was a retaliation? This whole steak thing was blown out of proportion. No one got hurt, bruised or killed just insulted. read past posts in this thread and you'll notice the somalian entries have the name calling and insults as well.If they're going to yelp and moan, they should'nt have dirty hands.Respect is earned NOT given freely

Trepanation, go to any school in the twin cities that have Somali children in classrooms and you will see special treatment and privilege. It was clearly pointed out and substantiated to Mr. Wessler a couple of years ago we he denied the fact, as you do, and completely lost control of his captive audience and the seminar had to be rescheduled. You are either a Muslim or blind. I also noticed that yesterday your blogs were one of the only advocates for the Muslim, which says a lot if you cannot recognize the problems and pass it off as ignorance and intolerance by the rest of the community.

Kids will do the darndest things! THis is most likely just a young teens attempt at a bad joke. It may be he learned from his parents to hate some people, but i wouldn't blame it on the parents. It is middle school age children they have a lot of chemistry going on in their bodies right now,I doubt even they know why this happened. Chances are the student doesn't understand why he did this, someday may even realize he is asshamed of his actions. Many of us have had this type of experience only to wish later on in life it had never happened. I am not a malicious person by any means, yet, there are some times when I think back at some of the things I did when this age that make me cringe. Not excusing it. Too bad the adults made such a big deal of it. To the Samalians it may be a big deal but I can't help but think of the post that mentions everyone eats what is there regardless

If a Christian child wanted to pray quietly while in school, I am sure nobody would tell him he was not allowed to. It’s not illegal to do so. Requiring ALL students to do so or requiring all students to pray to Mecca is illegal. For years, Jewish students are allowed to miss school (and not be counted absent) on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (Jewish high holy days). It’s called religious ACCOMADATION and there is nothing illegal or wrong about it. How does this bother any of you? Is anybody forcing you to become Muslim?

No, I'm not Muslim. I just don't see your claim of special treatment. Most people I associate with see the situation as I do. I have a wide circle of friends, family and acquaintances, too. You may think they you hold the majority opinion on this but you don't. And, to be honest with you, people like your are laughed at. People in power do not pay attention to you. So writing letter etc. is going to do nothing. You may disagree with this, but it's the stone cold truth.

I think we are mixing issues here. From this middle school story, we ought to address the intention of the actions committed. Then, we can move to the other issues praying, welfare etc. If history is part of the discussion, I am amazed at the selective amnesia we potray. Remember, this land we now call ours belonged to someone else...they were all wiped out...Does history repeat itself? So, the Somali issue cannot be discussed from a judgmental point of view. Somalis have the right to drive nice car, go to school, work, and be free. Let's stop being petty and face the real issue. Remember the late Matt (RIP)was also joking! So, how much prank can the Somalis take? It's been 6 years since they mover here. Live and let live.

Did you know that the samali's get free drivers ed courses. I guess as the saying goes you get what you pay for.I Have seen many times when they are all over the road , go past stopped school busses and a teenage girl went passed a four way stop sign and crashed into my 90 year old grandfather and took off . Luckily someone who saw had a cell phone followed the girl and gave the cops her plate number.

Unknown...I have seen from my work window so very "white" people going the wrong way on Park, Pine, Ash Streets. Tell me where the free driving schools are? My niece needs the lessons these summer. I also know of a white hit and run driver who was white and the person who called the police and got the tag was white...you know what...the other driver was Somali. Stopping petty...
