Author of fake article puzzled

LEWISTON - On Monday, Nicholas Plagman was a freelance writer making five bucks for an embellished story about a ham. By Wednesday night, he was nationally known, in hot water with at least two news agencies and more than a little bewildered by the whole thing.
Plagman, who lives in Atlanta, says he has no idea how Fox News picked up his story on Tuesday. In fact, he had no idea the parody about an incident in Lewiston had become national news at all, until Wednesday afternoon when he heard about it on the radio.
"I was just trying to do like they do on 'The Daily Show,'" said Plagman, 24. "I just write about stories in the news... stuff that's interesting. I didn't think it would have such a big audience."
Plagman, who is educated in biology rather than journalism, writes an occasional story for a Web site called Associated Content. Earlier this month, he found a story about a middle school student in Lewiston accused of harassing a Somali classmate by placing a ham on the table in the school cafeteria.
The incident has been labeled by some as a hate crime. To Plagman, that was just absurd enough to write about with his own blend of exaggeration. So he embellished quotes and attributed them to a school superintendent, a man who runs the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence, and a Somali student.
Plagman defended his decision to quote real people as saying things they never uttered. It is part of the parody process, he said.
"Has anyone noticed that the first half of every quote is real?" Plagman said.
In fact, many people noticed. They noticed particularly after Fox presented Plagman's story as real news in a national broadcast on Tuesday. Other nationally broadcast radio and television news agencies ran with the story as well, and it was only after NBC called the Sun Journal to verify the story that the hoax was uncovered.
The result: A flood of nasty calls and e-mails to Lewiston High School, shame on the part of Fox, and disgust expressed by The Associated Press, the Lewiston Sun Journal and those who had been misquoted.
"I think it's unfortunate because if you look at it as a parody, it's fine," Plagman said. "From most of the feedback I've seen, people can see that it's a parody."
Lawyers for the AP are reviewing Plagman's story and will take legal action if they feel it is warranted, according to Larry Laughlin, bureau chief in Northern New England. Plagman on Wednesday was not sure if he was in trouble or not.
"I don't know if they're looking for someone to blame, or what," he said.
He received a message from someone at Associated Content Wednesday afternoon. It was clear by the voice of the caller that the ham story was becoming a thornier issue than Plagman is used to.
"He seemed flabbergasted," Plagman said. "He seemed kind of desperate to get in touch with me."
By Wednesday night, Associated Content had put a disclaimer above Plagman's story. It stated: "This is not an actual news story. It is a parody."
Plagman was told not to discuss the situation with the press. He decided to speak with the Sun Journal after the people from Associated Content failed to call him back. It is important, he said, that people understand that humor was his only ambition when he took liberties with the nationally publicized story.
"I just write to make people laugh," he said. "I like to point out the silliness of the situation."
Plagman had no idea, even Wednesday night when he was interviewed, that Lewiston has a sizable Somali population. He had not heard that there was occasional conflict between some residents and Somali members of the community. He meant no offense to anybody when he wrote his parody, he said. As a rule, he tries to avoid insulting anyone and he eschews hot button issues.
"I'm very apolitical," Plagman said. "I don't watch the news because it's boring and depressing."
He did have his own opinions on the so-called ham incident, but he said it was not those opinions that compelled him to spoof the story. To Plagman, the idea that the student who unleashed the ham was suspended for two weeks and labeled as a racist was too preposterous to resist.
"I think he was being a jerk and he should be punished," Plagman said. "But the whole thing about the hate crime is ... pushing it."
For the most part, the feedback Plagman received after writing his less-than-factual story has been positive. Some readers of Associated Content enjoyed it and said they will read more of his work, Plagman said.
But on Wednesday, he remained baffled by the uproar the spoof had caused. The erroneous quotes were his own creation, he said, and they were meant to be amusing. But it was his belief that the story of ham inspiring such bitterness and debate was bizarre enough on its own. Such a story, he said, doesn't need much embellishing.
"I wrote my article a week or two after the story came out," he said. "I wasn't the first one to make a big deal out of it." |

Posted By:TGIF at April 26, 2007 6:08 AM (Suggest Removal) I think the only person to blame is the young man who pulled the prank. He has to deal with it. The Somalis who were offended by the act believe the school system handled the incident appropriately. Anyone else who comes into this issue, have their own agenda. As a member of the LMS community I feel as a family we can handle this issue. So far, among the Somalis, life goes on well because this is not the end...more pranks in disguise will always follow. Can someone remind me some of the jokes about the Francos by the Irish and English; the Irish by the English; and now everybody else against the Somalis. I hope I won't live long enough to see the Somalis pull the Same against the "Martians" in 2055.

Posted By:TGIF at April 26, 2007 6:20 AM (Suggest Removal) Education is free in this country at least till High school. Here is what a Somali high schooler wants to share. She believes in the power of knowledge:
"Somalis are legal immigrants resettled by the US government. They have every right, but to vote. We can serve this country in war, but cannot change the law i.e. cannot vote till they're naturalzed as citizens. We were victims of war and persecution and here on humanitarian grounds based on the values of this country. The last time she checked Somalia does not manufacture bullets & bombs they are supplied by people who love Africa at heart. LOL. Immediately, war breaks out they send tonnes of food and flash it on the headline news. We have chosen Maine as our new home. We were never kicked out from any State. We voluntarily came here to pursue our 'nightmares'. Actually, where were settled at first didn't look like Amreica it was a war & drug zone...I knoe some of you don't know this. Having said all these, I will go to college in Maine. So far, there are 12 Somali students at UMO, 8 at Bangor, and to many to count at USM, CMCC, SMCC, and Andover." For your info we have graduates who have stayed on in Maine after their colege education. Some of them drive the cars you see on the roads and this hurts some of you...I don't know why. I think some of you want us to be on welfare for ever...why feel bad when we become like you...work hard, compete for jobs etc. Please, we have good apples and bad ones. Some of us never had access to education, food, and water before. We have lost our country, language, culture, and sense of belonging. we are helpless and depend on the handouts, but we still have hope. You will either make us or break us. I am optimistic some of us will be productive members of the community. This is jut Maine, the teething process might take 10 years...invest in us we provide the demographics the state needs. You don't have to bring guest workers and spend money on importing labor ( I feel proud of my English teacher at LHS). Some of us might be disrespective to you, they are just ignorant."
Oh boy, I will stop there...this student is just 15 years. She makes me proud. So please I hope this has educated some of you.

He did not back down or apologize to Maine and Lewiston public sector hypocrites, politicians, teachers and social workers for his satire. This will undoubtedly increase his popularity, create copy cats and make Somaliton a bigger laughing stock throughout the country than it already is.

Posted By:4U2 Consider at April 26, 2007 8:16 AM (Suggest Removal) TGIF Let me share this with you. The elementary schools and high schools receive additional tax funding for every Somali enrolled that is not provided to our children. Maybe we should all feel warm and fuzzy for now providing the Somali with a free college education with our tax dollars while we and our children pay off college loans. I for one don't feel warm and fuzzy about the Somali free ride, sorry.

Posted By:jesme at April 26, 2007 8:34 AM (Suggest Removal) The most unfortunate part of this entire saga is that the school system felt it necessary to PUBLICALLY APOLOGIZE TO THE SOMALI COMMUNITY, in the veiled form of an "informational letter" that they sent to all LMS parents. That stupid decision went viral and, as a result, has once again turned our slightly soiled city into another laughing stock. The school administration politicized this matter of its own accord, and they should live with the consequences. These are children. The incident was indeed unfortunate, but let's keep this in perspective! The Somali community has learned very quickly how to manipulate the system with the "hate crime" complaint, be it real or exaggerated.

Posted By:Paul at April 26, 2007 8:52 AM (Suggest Removal) Faux News-it didn't get that nickname for nothing. Funny, isn't it? -that author of that article had to totally fabricate in order to "point out the silliness" and/or "make his point".
"4U2" -it doesn't seem to phase or bother you about the white kids who are getting free and/or subsidized college tuition. Once again, it's not about "the system" is it? -it's about race and national origin for people like you. You, and others like you, sit on these threads all day begging and cajoling others to feed into your hate, blame and racism. Well, buddy, your numbers are dwindling -and it's called evolution by education.

I hope that the students and their parents allow that the insults they have endured are from a small and cruel minority. I am glad they saw Maine as a safe place to move after the shock of crime-ridden Atlanta. Maine is a good place and the presence of people as wise as this student makes it even better.

Posted By:william at April 26, 2007 9:48 AM (Suggest Removal) 'Enough' was on the right track for a moment: "These are children. The incident was indeed unfortunate, but let's keep this in perspective!" However, he/she lost my support with the statement that followed regarding the Somali community. For those of you taking issue with the "Somali free ride", take a look at the system as a whole, not just from a racial standpoint. The system is flawed. Nobody can deny that. Whether a welfare recipient is white, black, red, yellow or plaid makes no difference. There will forever be those who take advantage and those who find it easier to accept a handout than grab a hold of their own future. On the other hane there will also be those who genuinely need a helping hand from time to time and are deeply grateful that help is available. Neither race, nor sex, nor creed is a deciding factor in who will fall into what category. So please, let's leave all of it out. As far as the reality of this incident, let's not forget that these are children we're talking about. It's obvious the young man was fully aware that his prank would ruffle the feathers of the Somali students, otherwise he would not have carried it out. It was a prank, admittedly a stupid one, and I believe this is where it ends. Call me an optimist, but I honestly don't believe a national news story crossed the mind of this child as his buddies threw dares his way. I don't believe he realized the weight this act carried. We shouldn't even have to have this discussion. This incident should have been dealt with inside the school walls, between those directly involved, just as any other school prank would have been handled.

Posted By:Paul at April 26, 2007 10:47 AM (Suggest Removal) Well, TK, did he tag his story as "spoof" when he submitted it? But I still remain to my point that he had to embellish his article in order to make it "funny" or make any "point" at all ... the situation was not "funny" on it's own legs, now was it?! He fabricated in order to de-victimize the actual victim and elevate the aggressors into "victims". He couldn't get the aggressors to appear as "victims" without falsifying, lying and making things up. Not funny at all.

Looks like this Plagman fellow is crying "satire, spoof and parody" ONLY AFTER being called out for his libel and slander. Note also how he says he was aware that the Fox/Faux was running it as a factual story -and yet he did NOTHING to correct that error and spoke out only after he was contacted. Kudos to NBC for fact checking before running the article.

Posted By:JOHN SPRUILL at April 26, 2007 12:36 PM (Suggest Removal) The fact that Plagman would think that labeling this a hate crime is absurb shows just how far we still need to go before our society is a place that welcomes and respects diversity. Placing pork in front of a a person of Islamic faith was not a random act; it was an intentful act of doing something known to be offensive. The fact that a minor did in school is no less offensive but more disturbing. We look to our youth for progress not setbacks.
This attitude was not born in LMS. This issue goes beyond LMS because the attitide goes beyond LMS. It is the same attitude that caused the former Mayor of Lewiston to make his insensitive and thoughtless comments.
The facts are, like everyone else in our community, most Somalis are hard working individuals who are just tyring to better their lives like we are. The do so comming from situations as bad as we can possibly imagine. They have not asked for or received any "special" treatment. They are no different than the hundreds of millions of immigrants who have found refuge, new life and hope in our country. They seek no more than the what the Pilgrims wanted when they first came here; a safe and friendly place to call home.

Posted By:Lynda at April 26, 2007 1:04 PM (Suggest Removal) I think the guy who wrote the parady hit the nail on the head. With his words and with his humor. LMS blew the incident WAY out of proportion. It was a prank and should have been handled like one. Sometimes we as people over think and over critisize, and fix things that aren't broken, just for lack of something more to do. If we all had to live like back in the days of horse and buggies we wouldn't have time to fret over such trivial crap. The USA has been fine for hundreds of years, why do "we" keep trying to fix it? In doing this we cause more problems than we had in the first place. Life is not fair, for anyone and no matter how hard we try to make it so, it ain't gonna happen. There will always be someone out there saying someone else is getting treated better or getting more.

I have nothing against them being here. HOWEVER! What I do have an issue with is our own government officials, internal "systems", school administrators, and the media of nurturing their arrogant, "Feel sorry for me Somali Syndrome". Are there kickbacks involved here????? Let's draw attention to Lewiston Maine in regards to the Somali's so that we can get more federal aid so that they can get even MORE? By giving them all of the attention, we are only feeding the arogance of a certain few in the Somali community who will continue to "cry wolf" when their egos are bruised. I blame our government officials and the media for each and every incident.

Posted By:PINK at April 26, 2007 1:17 PM (Suggest Removal) First of all I think it is safe to say that no one is going to agree. Whatever our opinions, we either end up looking like we hate the Somalians (so we are racist) or we don't care about those who are not Somalian. I agree that there are "good apples and bad apples" in EVERY race. Sometimes people see more of the bad ones and then can only voice their opinions (and how they feel) on that. I also think it is hard for some people who see that the Somalians are getting "free money, assistance etc" when people who have been in the area cannot get that. However I would like to point out that perception is not always what is true but perception speaks loudly; and that is what many people base their opinions on. I will say that I don't know any Somalians personally but I know that when I see a Somalian I can't help but wonder why they drive a Lexus and I don't (and I'm a hard worker, make good money and have a college education). Or why they have their own business, or their kids seem to have more than the kids down the road....However, I know that there are Somalians out there that DON'T fall into this category as well. It is just how things are perceived which is part of life. I don't think that all Mainers are racist, but there are some. I also think that there isn't much diversity in Maine so when some comes in it is scary and different. I also think that some Somalians (and probably other races--not saying only Somalians) do play the race card and that is why things get out of control and people have strong opinions.

It sems that all you liberals out there have forgotten the ABC Dan Rather-gate and the lies he spewed on air. What about the New York times and the Jason Blair incident with his plagerism which resulted in his firing? It seems that they still have problem's reporting the news correctly. NBC has also had its share of problems and maybe that is why they checked out this story. It was a first!
This incident should have been taken care of by school officials and the student punished accordingly. I don't in any way condone what this student did but to have this incident published on the front page of the LSJ is absurd. It is political correctness gone amuck and only causes racial tension. The LSJ stated the blog was shut down over the hate filled messages. The most vile-hate filled statement was posted by a Somali railing against the United States. I was shocked and appalled. Just remember that the Somali's would not have the resources and opportunities if it were not for the goodness of the people of Lewiston.

Instead, it is the religion that determines its un-cleanliness. A Mainer born and bred who is a practitioner of the Islamic faith would have the same restriction.

This was yesterday's article. I am astonished that these people writing in the blogs today are sounding the way they are: for anyone who is reading this blog, please refer to the prior date's post. There is a lot of anger and strife in L/A, and to belittle it or ignore it would be foolish. I wrote at length about my rough experience in L/A (please see my lengthy posts at the end of the link for yesterday's post) and, to be honest with whomever's reading this, ignoring or belittling the social strife, anger, and frustration won't solve the problem.

Posted By:anonymous at April 26, 2007 4:41 PM (Suggest Removal) By the way, seeing yesterday's blog was very insightful in regards to what people truly think vs what people act like they're thinking in front of other people. I sensed yesterday that people were upset with governmental issues moreso than this particular topic, and I think that the frustration is somewhat justified. People seemed angry with: double-standards in regards to religion in schools, affirmative action, large movements of different ethnicities into areas, what is classified as a "hate crime", children being "brought to justice" like adults would, welfare, and many, many other topics that I believe absolutely need to be addressed. Once again, I believe that this particular incident was a trigger that sparked insightful (sometimes angry) thought that should possibly be re-addressed, possibly from a more constructive, analytical perspective. Also, please don't let this pass by and go to your 9-5, run-of-the-mill job, and ignore the frustrations of many in a community. Address it, and overcome it. Otherwise, you will just be "spray-painting over the rust" so-to-speak...

Posted By:Brian at April 26, 2007 4:52 PM (Suggest Removal) Again... I don't think anyone should have anything against Mr. Plagman. He did a spoof of a news item for the humor page of a website knowing people should take it as that. In fact I find the fake quote, "Ham is not a toy", quite funny.
The problem is Fox News, instead of getting the AP article or checking their facts seems to like to get their "news" from the land of make believe.
On their morning show they believed the fake article and didn't check their facts like a real news organization would.
They made a big deal about on the morning news and said they were going to have a follow up the next day.
I wrote to them trying to straighten them out and they ignored me. Then the next day, once they found out made a mistake, they didn't mention it and didn't say they messed up. This is almost like yelling "fire" in a crowded theatre and running out before chaos insues. A news organization should be responsible and admit their mistakes. At least Mr. Plagman was man enough to speak about his spoof. I'm still waiting for an e-mail back from Fox News.
I'm starting to think Fox News should put a caption on the screen stating "This is not an actual news. It is a parody."

Posted By:Matthew at April 26, 2007 5:01 PM (Suggest Removal) Anonymous, That was probably the most incisive analysis of this brouhaha yet. Thanks for cutting through the crap.
Basically I agree - there is racism and or zenophobia injected into this argument but there is also some justified anger over this whole issue and related issues that have been kept in check because of political correctness.
I think there should be an honest discussion about race, immigration, double standards, religion, affirmative action and welfare
These issues need to be discussed but becasue of political correctness they are not. Truly, that is the fault of liberals not conservatives. Political correctness is an ideology that was created by liberals and it shuts down any conversation that could possibly offend someone.
Hate crime (very Orwellian - thought control) was also created by libs.
I swear many liberals are stuck in the civil rights days of the 1960's. I hate to tell you - things have changed alot since then. In many ways, things have reversed.
Finally, concerning Fox News, it is no worse than other news outlets (liberal ones like CBS, NBC or the New York Times).
At least Fox, along with talk radio now provides some balance to the liberal monoply of new discemination. Thats why many liberals hate it.

Posted By:Brian at April 26, 2007 5:28 PM (Suggest Removal) Matthew, first, are you from Fox News? Because maybe you can have them answer my e-mails. Maybe you haven't read the article but Fox News reported the fake story as true. They were the only ones that I know of that had it all over the morning news and then they didn't come forward and say anything when they found out they messed up. No matter if the are liberal or conservitive they messed up and they should say they did. I rather what you may think is "liberal" news (or maybe CBS NBC & CNN are moderate and you are just to conservative to see it) then get unresearched fake conservative news.
What is wrong with this country... can't people say "We made a mistake anymore" and take responsiblity for their actions.
Second, You say you agree there's racism but it seems that you only think it's this so called "double standard" reverse discrimination. Discrimination still happens no matter who you are White, asian, Black, Muslim, Catholic, Jew, old, young, male, female on and on. The "Hate Crime" laws protect all these people equally.
As far as affirmative action and welfare, I believe in some, but not all, because a person needs a hand up when they are down. If that makes me a liberal, fine but I don't understand the whole "hey, you got more then me" or the "me first" mentality.
I to sometimes feel the government is to liberal with welfare but I don't blame it on other races or immigrates I blame it on the system and the politicians that don't change it.
I believe the middle class especially the lower middle class is getting hosed in this country and its the corporations, that don't believe they shouldn't be responsible for their works well being, and the governments fault.
You may think I'm liberal but I'm not. I'm a moderate and I think all the problems you talk about are the fault of both liberals and conservatives.

Posted By:TGIF at April 26, 2007 5:32 PM (Suggest Removal) So far I have not seen or heard a single Muslim in the State of Maine complain about this issue. As I said earlier the school handled it well. Please, the rumor mongers tell me who leaked this info to the press????????? The Muslim community is calm and I think in every respect they should be upset by this incident. You're making fools of yourselves...stop the hatred and stop the Maine pranks they aren't funny!

Posted By:PR at April 26, 2007 5:50 PM (Suggest Removal) Some people posting here are saying the SOMALIS should stop whining and complaining?? Take a look at the numerous postings here by the virtuous, wonderful red-blooded Americans whining and complaining!! I hear the same old, tired "poor us" whining from jealous red-blooded Americans regarding the Vietnamese, Koreans, Mexicans, African-Americans--you name it. You folks haven't invented anything new here. Anybody that is non-white and seems to be making something of his life is a target and is cheating the system. By the way--where are the Somalis who are driving Lexuses?? I drop off my daughter at LHS every day and the only cars that I see Somalis driving are older minivans or modest sedans. Not that I give a rat's _ss. The only reason I notice is that I pull up behind then in the drop-off zone and five or six kids get out of them. Oh, one more thing: the State of Maine is considering welfare reform and limiting welfare recipients to receive benefits for only 5 years. I am assuming you mistreated, overlooked citizens will be heading up to Augusta to express your support so the Somalis won't continue to suck the blood from Lewiston, right? Now's your chance.

Posted By:Chris at April 26, 2007 6:16 PM (Suggest Removal) Limiting welfare to ONLY 5 years!!! What happened to 2 years that the state was talking about? I made another call and found out that you would have to be a resident here first, then wait for 90 days after that. Well, it's a 6 month wait to be a resident, then add the 90 days, so it would mean a 9-month wait before we start handing out the lotto &&&&. That should stop some of the welfare influx but I say 2 years and then you have to make so much money before you "qualify" again. Like they do unemployment. I realize that's insurance we(employers) pay for but it's at least encouraging some to work.

Posted By:PR at April 26, 2007 7:08 PM (Suggest Removal) Susan, I don't know what the current welfare benefits limits are, but "only five years" is what is being proposed by welfare reformers. The woman who testified on behalf of the current welfare system (she's some head honcho) said Maine revamped the welfare system several years ago. (I can't recall the exact time frame she stated during her testimony). She also said it isn't broken so it doesn't need to be fixed.

Posted By:lauren at April 27, 2007 12:03 AM (Suggest Removal) If this issue is broken down to its crux, stripping it of any political baggage and forgetting about the fake article altogether, we can develop a more truthful understanding of the initial incident. Something that needs to change in the community is the “Us v. Them” mentality. Some people may think that this incident was blown out of proportion, but look at if from a student’s perspective. What took place at LMS was an extremely insensitive, ignorant, and yes, racist act. We can’t dismiss this incident as being blown out of proportion; it was done with intent and very offensive. Some may be quick to dismiss acts like this because it is not something they have to deal with. Just because you wouldn’t personally find it offensive does not mean someone is wrong in their belief that it is. I think it’s essential to keep in mind that many of us in the community benefit from the luxury of ignorance and the assumption of our beliefs as rightness. The major thing that was violated as a result of this incident was this student’s right to a safe and unobstructed education. No student has the right to keep another student from learning. EVERYONE has the right to an education.

Posted By:Reality at April 27, 2007 12:36 AM (Suggest Removal) I am glad to see people calling FOX on their shoddy journalism. And to defend them for providing "balance" to a liberal media is a farce. Portraying a parody as a fact is not "balance", it is wrong and destructive. Not quite as bad as when they try to "balance" the reason we go to war, or to "balance" the Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch stories, or when they try to "balance" the perjury of Scooter Lynch, or when they try to "balance" the incompetency of our Attorney General, or when they ....
(oh well at least FOX news didn't shoot someone in the face). Anyway, you can keep your O'Reilly, Hume and Hannity, I'll stick with Brian Williams, 60 Minutes, and Oldberman. (By the way, Dan Rather worked for CBS and not ABC)

Posted By:Matthew at April 27, 2007 7:04 AM (Suggest Removal) Hey Brian,
I don't work for Fox News, but I do like some of their programming. Also, you are not a moderate - you are a liberal. Also affirmative action is racial discrimination against White people (especially White males). The good news is - its on the way out! Every time people get a chance to vote on it they vote it out (California, Washinton & Michigan). Plus, now that we have a better Supreme Court - I would say its days are numbered.
I admit I'm a conservative and I'm proud of it. After all, there are not many of us in liberal New England. I'm a minority and need affirmative action - ha ha.
Hey reality,
Have fun watching Oberman with the other 10 people accross the U.S. who watch MSNBC - ha ha.
You guys are apparently mad because people actually watch Fox News. It has been kicking the other cable new outfits' butts for years. Also, they have much nicer looking female anchors/announcers/reporters (on average)than the other networks (on average). If I can get some balanced news (without the lib slant) and also see attractive women - whats wrong with that.
