Global warming play leaves some hot under the collar

FARMINGTON - Expectations of hearing Mt. Blue Middle School band, orchestra and choir students perform Wednesday left some parents deeply disappointed and even angry with the performance of "Hurricane of Change," a Foothills Arts Center's production.

The production was an examination of global warming involving adult and teenage actors, musicians and puppeteers, Foothills Arts Director Anne Geller said earlier this week. Students from the After-School Program did some work on the scripts and costumes, and the Mt. Blue Middle School band, orchestra and chorus, along with a community chorus, accompanied the actors.

With a daughter in the orchestra, Lawrence J. Dwight Jr. of Wilton expected to hear music performed at the program by the middle school students, he said Friday. Instead, the orchestra seated on the far side of the gym in a darkened room, simply accompanied the actors who were mostly high school students and adults.

"I couldn't even see my daughter," he said as he explained how he felt the students, parents and school administration were deceived by Geller.

Dwight said the content of the play was too political and usurped the children's concert. He also feels that Geller, who has long worked with children, this time exploited the students and the community and should apologize for it.

A donation box for Foothills Arts, Dwight said, was placed by a door and he contends that the money should go to the middle school musical program instead of Foothills Arts.

Two mailings with information on the production were sent out. One was sent six weeks ago and another two weeks ago, Geller said. The music teacher also gave out information last fall regarding the production plans.

Dwight said he has spoken with six members of the school board and plans to go before the board at the next meeting.

The biggest issue, said Assistant SAD 9 Superintendent Susan Pratt, was poor communication that didn't make it clear that this would be a variation from the spring concert traditionally done to a multi-disciplinary production.

Pratt said she had received some calls from parents and others. Some thought it was a wonderful event, and others didn't. This was a collaborative effort between the SAD 9 music program, Foothills Arts and the Community Players, she said.

One mother, Teresa Hardy, who is also president of the Mt. Blue Music Boosters, said she also attended the performance Wednesday expecting to hear the middle school band and chorus perform their last concert for the year.

"As a parent, I was disappointed," Hardy said. "I went with the expectation of hearing my daughter, Ashley, perform and I was deprived of that right. There were things in the play I didn't agree with, some of it was one sided, some of the message was good. It wasn't what I would like to see be the final concert for chorus and band - that was a disappointment."

Hardy's daughter, a seventh-grader, was involved in writing a scene last fall for the production but didn't want to continue because she felt it bashed Republicans and farming, she said. The Hardys work a farm in Farmington.

The show was revised to work without the school's band, orchestra and chorus for Friday's performance, Geller said, later saying that she did not receive one complaint voiced to her but had received compliments.

Do we really need to indictrinate our middle-school children with the views of one political party over another? This is a public school, paid for by everyone's taxes, not just right-wingers. Here is a link to the production from last night (involving public school children, in a public school, and asking for money at the door too! And BTW, Foothill Arts is partially funded by tax dollars). There is a song called The President Meets Mother Nature - nice, lets teach our kids to disrespect the person who is leading our country. Betcha they wouldn't have something like this if the president was a Democrat. http://www.foothillsarts.org/hurricane.html

The issue is that the parents were denied the right to hear their children play music learned during the year, and the appropriatness of an overtly political message in a middle school production. notabushman, would you agree to this if it were a production lead by a national socialist?

Although I agree we have a responsibility to take care of our environment, and I practice what I preach, I am not a left wingnut and don't force my views on the community and children!! I expected to enjoy an evening of band, choral, and orchestra pieces performed by the MBMS students. What I received was an outrageous message where students were used as puppets to voice the views of a few select adults running the program. Outrageous!!! My child's band teacher as well as the students had no idea of what the content of the performance was until Wednesday evening and was visibly upset during the performance. Many parents and community members left the performance. Many parents remained out of respect for the performers. However, once in the parking lot, voices were raised and parents were expressing their outrage at such a message. I wish the Foothills Art Center took a careful look at the reprecussions this program had on the community and students. The Center's credibility is ruined. I certainly cannot support a group that bashes the President of the United States. Our President might not be perfect, however he deserves respect as our leader.

Isn't it strange that we can not have God or Christianity in schools but the religion of global warming can be used to indoctrinate the minds made of mush by the beautiful people. Without doubt there are similar schools programs dissing global warming on Mars and Pluto where scientists have indications of similar warming. My, my could it be that this warming condition is something other than we little people of earth.

When my son was in the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra, the final concert featured dancers from the Portland Ballet. Even though it sounded like a good idea, I was very disappointed because it was my son's last concert as a high-schooler but the orchestra was in the dark at the back of the stage. I didn't go to my son's concert to watch ballet dancers; I was there to watch my son. The Mt. Blue parents were disappointed to find their kids performing in the back of the room as they sat thoroughly disappointed and subjected to somebody's political message. That added insult to injury--whether they agreed with the message or not. They were there for their kids and I can appreciate their outrage.

This fuss seems way out off control. What are you teaching your kids. If I hold my breath and stomp my feet, I will get my way. Who are the mature people here? The kids wrote the songs, the kid wrote the skits, the kids did a wonderful job on playing out their parts. The project had been going on for a year and now there is some big surprise, where was everyone that is complaining during that year. I have voted Republican since Ronald Reagan and would vote for Bush again if he could run again. I shop at Wal-mart. I thought the show was very good. If you are mad about the content purhaps there is something you are feeling guilty about. If you are mad about not being able to see your child very well because the lights were not fully on because of the projecting parts of the show or the shadow puppets, that is regretable. I could not see all the chorus and orchestra as well as I would if all the lights were on, but they could still be seen. MS. Gellar did a great job on pulling all the parts of the show together into a very good smoothly done production. The kids were great. Too bad some of you can't look for the good.

3 things you don't talk about: 1. Politics 2. Religion 3. Money No one ever agrees and in some cases, like above, both sides resort to name calling. We are supposed to be adults, but these veiws just cause the worst in all of us come out. Involving a political statement into a production such as this, no matter which side of the aisle you are on will always enrage the other party not represented. I say stay away from the politics and stick with music and/or dancing. It only causes an uproar in the end.

Michael's post is way off point. Our children were expoited. It does not matter what the subject matter was, what you think of the message, how good the skits were, who wrote them, or how great Geller may be. She used and expoited childen in an overtly political way. The question is why Michael aren't you outraged?

Skip...how in the world do you equate this event with the teacher's "union". What a stretch! Wait, the sun came up this morning...teacher's union at it again!!
