WATERFORD - A local horse club is holding its first Fall Family Day on Sept. 29 to raise funds to repair a horseback riding ring at the Waterford World's Fair fairgrounds on Green Street.

The day is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the Waterford fairgrounds, continue all day and conclude with a performance by the Country Ridge Rider.

According to event organizer Penny Hill, the ring, which is used for barrel racing and other events, contains rocks that are bruising the horses' hooves. The rocks, she said, cannot be removed by raking.

The club hopes to raise money to purchase enough sand to spread 2 to 2½ inches on the 100-by-200 foot area, making it safe for the horses and riders, said Hill.

The club which does not have a name, is hoping to merge with a 4-H horse club in Otisfield and 4-H clubs for rabbits and sheep, according to Hill.

Ten to 15 girls from the Waterford area participate in the horse club, and a leader is being trained to take over the club as a 4-H club, said Hill.

The family day will offer games on horseback, wagon rides, 4-H pony rides, face-painting, miniature horse demonstrations and more.

At 2 p.m. a pig roast with salad and dessert, will be offered at $6 for adults and $3 for kids. Raffles and horseshoe tournament will be ongoing through the day. The Country Ridge Rider will wrap up the event with a performance from 8 p.m. to midnight. The concert is $9 per person.
